Ok, expecting this thread to disappear relatively fast, but maybe not!
I love Wing-Surf'ing fast, and am always tweaking and working on averages, peaks and technique. So I thought maybe a Wing Foiling GPS Speed leaderboard could be fun to see what if fast and where people are at. Also great to share best practice, ask questions and better share what's working.
I have been pushing my top ends speeds a lot recently and yesterday hit some excellent speeds with great averages. But, was it actually fast?
Gear: Naish Hover 110CU with JET 1240HA/310HA/75 & S25 Wing-Surfer 6m.
Conditions: BOM observations for Terrey Hills Ranged from Average of 4kn to Gusts of 15kn. My guess would have been similar, I was drifting at times for 20 minutes+, but also lit on the 6m when it turned on. Wind from the WSW - W then back WSW before kicking at SW.

Very impressing! You're closing in on the windfoilers, maybe time for a new sub-discipline at www.gps-foilsurfing.com/?
Hi ,
This was my fastest speed 41,63 km/h during a down winder last winter in Belgium on the North Sea , wind was blowing + 30 kn. used F-One Gravity 1400 Foil + F-One Swing 3.5
I think it has merit. I'm a windsurfer, now windfoiling as well. 6m Wing on the way. I was looking for discussion and review of wings and found it hiding in the SUP forum, which I would otherwise never frequent. Some websites allow you to save sub forums or threads to a favourites list. That would help here.
on speed, I'll be tempted to try my wing on flat water with a conventional windsurfer board. 30+ should be achievable under that scenario, but of course that's not foiling...
I don't normally try for max speeds as I usually just use the wing to get upwind to surf downwind. The waves in the river weren't really forming up today so I thought I'd give the speed thing a go. Don't have the technology for different splits like JB, just max. Room for improvement still. Wasted a couple of gusts by starting to lose control and having to bail.
Wind gusting to around 17kts according to seabreeze, water quite lumpy.
Wing 5m F One swing
Foil Takuma lol 1300
Board Sunova 6'8 Downwind
I'm around 85kg. Swap back and forth between the 1600 and 1300. Haven't really settled on a favourite.
Have to get back out on the wing to keep up with you lot!
Whilst it isn't apples with apples highest speed thus far is 39.4 surfing. Was absolutely flying... Go Foil 140 with high aspect Maliko tail.
I recon they would be great to race. They react so fast to the wind shifts and up wind you can even pump straight up for a bit. Unfortunately I'm stuck twisted on my would be goofie side which sucks
Kobo what did you record that on , can you break up individual waves . 45kph seems too high so does 87 strokes in a minute & 16.14m per stroke .
Recorded on a garmin Fenix 5 watch with the surf tracker 2 app. It records individual waves , lefts or rights but it also records the paddle or walk back out which makes the average speeds etc low.I don't know how accurate it is ,sometimes it records really high speed spikes but I think that might be when I crash.I ignore the spikes in the graph and mostly the max speeds are in the mid 30s , but interestingly I consistently get the highest speeds prone surfing not kite foiling with the surf wings.Ive tried to go as fast as possible with the kite but can't seem to match the prone foil top speeds.I think maybe the kite is pulling up as well as along so it's harder to hold the wing down while kiting?
just from a out sider looking in ,do you think they will develop a wing that is just made for speed foil winging .
eg ,smaller inflatable luff ,and maybe a batten for a more rigid ,wing ..
i guess its a fairly new sport ,and it may look different in a few years ...i'm sure there's someone working on it now .
Yeah the fenix (or garmin in general) is definitely not the most accurate out there. When paddling a ski or sup in a steady tempo, the recorded speed jumps around a fair bit.
Looks like locosys is the one to go to for accurate speeds.
Yep, I second the Locosys GW60 watch. Doppler based . Used by kite and windsurf speed sailors, very accurate. Upload to Sportstracklive online site for analysis .
The fenix seems reliable for speed when set to the kite app , but it only records max speed then and not individual waves, the length of each wave ridden seems ok on the surf tracker app.
Great session yesterday in a super gusty westerly. Cracked a 41.3kmh max run with some serious averages.
Is ther more development perhaps where a wing and a conventional rig merge closer or is that losing the whole point of the slingwing ?
