My new DEEP OceanBoards 10ft Log:

I have mostly for the last year or 2 been riding a 10'6" mal shape SUP and been really enjoying it. As much as the Gold Coast has some world class waves, more often than not, its not. I have smaller surf sups that are great when conditions are good or better, but the fun factor was just there on the bigger board no matter the conditions. After deciding I wanted to trim some "fat" off my 10'6", I went to Simon@DEEP to shape me a new low volume 10' log SUP.

I knew where I would like to go dimension wise, but wasn't sure. Speaking with Simon, we came up with a size that would still be ok to paddle for me at 6.1 and 85kg. Final size is 10' x 26" x 3 3/4" and approx 103ltr. Going with a single concave in the nose with light chines, flowing into a double at the tail and nice low volume rails

Typical DEEP customer service and the build quality/finish of the board is spot on.

I hadn't paddled much in the last 4 months due to working away and then the last 5 weeks being out thanks to a shoulder injury, so todays first paddle was going to be "interesting"... Todays conditions would be considered "**** house" on the official surf-o-meter. Blowing onshore northerlies for the last 4 days does nothing for us here. After a quick test paddle in the creek to check both board and shoulder I had to go try some waves. Finding that sweet spot, paddle wise, required a little adjustment but I'm getting there. On the 2 or 3 waves I caught, it feels what I think a mal should feel like, rather than a SUP. This board will be a go-er for sure

I could tell you how this board did this or that on the wave, how the hid dips and toes on the nose were countless.......but that would just be BS!

All I need now is to learn to surf and life will be grand.

A few more pics. Where my hand is placed is the thickest part of the board. The rails only get thinner from there.

Looks like a fun toy. Would love to see some video of it in action. Casso's Deep log goes pretty good which I think is 11'.
A couple of months into riding the Laird 10' Composite myself. Completely new to log style and finding it is an incredibly friendly board. The extra width and with me at 75kg makes it super stable. My shortSup is 26' wide and think a plank at that width would bring up the performance level a lot especially fitting it into tighter spots on the wave and maybe improve noderiding?
Enjoy the ride.

yeah, I new I wanted tint or pigment as it is, rather than painted. I had an Idea of what I wanted and they got it bang on. Word is that this board is VERY easily confused for a mal. The only real give away is the handle.

Thanks, I have not seen a new Laird in person, but going by the pics, they do look good and I think would have to be the best production mal SUP out there?

At 75kgs this board would be sweet for you, you could possibly even have it a touch thinner at say 3 1/2 or 3 3/8. I did a little cross steping and got "near" the nose yesterday and all things are feeling good, especially given how bad the surf was.

Id love to get some video but I dont know anyone that could be bothered to do that of me surfing.

That is a sweet looking longboard SUP! Am impressed with DEEP, they clearly can manufacture boards other than the Minions. What are you using for a fin in that bad boy?

Cheers

About 10kgs but I specifically asked Simon not to make it light. I asked for a stringer and he just happened to have a higher density EPS blank with stringer that was big enough. That with the 6-6-4 deck and 6-4 bottom gives it weight. My last board was closer to 13kg as it is a old PU construction SUP. It could be argued that the heavier weight may lose some acceleration, but it's a mal after all. The extra weight makes them ride heaps better in choppy or average conditions, carry through dead sections of waves and adds to the drive out of turns...

He could definitely make you a lighter one if you wished.

Not vacuum bagged, just normal epoxy construction with pigment in the resin rather than painted under the clear coat.

I think they may have played with vacuum bagging? But you would have to give Simon a call on that one.

A single McTavish 10inch "Redline" fin. Bought online from McTavish website. Great fins hand made by Wiz. I did get future side fin boxes installed if I ever want to ride as a 2+1.

Got a few more waves yesterday and today. Nothing great but good to be back in the water. Board is getting increasingly easier to paddle. Great drive in and out of turns. I have to work on my cross stepping. Im a bit of a heavy foot so to speak, something you can get away with on big volume boards. But I totally expected this. I see this board as improving my surfing as well as itself surfing better.

Totally stoked with it
