Hi all I am looking at getting a SUP after having a few paddles recently on Hire boards.
I am after any help out there as to what to buy ? I am just on the wrong side of 50 and am about 85 kg I surfed, windsurfed and sailed in my younger days so I have a little bit of knowledge about the water etc. I am looking for a stable allrounder for bay paddles butt will also go ok on small waves .

Cheers

I reckon you'd go all right with a Naish Mana 9'5 - pretty good in small waves, but still paddles & glides reasonably well. Good all around board that can do a little bit of everything

I'm also on the Mana 10, however I'm quite a bit heavier (~110kg) than SteveByrne @ 85kg. Steve, check out DJ's (DavidJohn - above) videos - he's on a Mana 9'5 in lots of them, so you can see how it paddles, surfs etc. His is a GT construction which is a bit lighter & a little more expensive. The GS (which I have) is a bit heavier and a tad cheaper. FYI the deck pad is also better on the GT, but it's fine on the GS also. Good luck!

10.6 ,11' ,11.4 Nalu.if you like long boarding .and they paddle faster than the mana .but narrower .30-31 rather than 33'and 32 like the mana ..
10.2 JP .is also a good all rounder .
there are many .good boards.
i think if its more for waves ,mana .both Nalu .
Get on a few . Before you buy .some of the hire boards are average .heavy and slow .

Firstly I'm a site sponsor and the board I am recommending is one our own brands. After reading your post I thought I'd share our Atlantis Halo Vid. We have demos available on the Gold Coast. This board is a stable performer and at your weight a 9'6 will paddle well and surf well too. From memory Jarrod an I rode 10'6s in the surf clip and they still surfed unreal despite being larger boards. New 2016 PVC construction is now in and these boards are still under $1000. Sorry for the "sales" pitch but your post made me think of these boards. Thanks, Tim

+ for the Halo as a starter - I was on a 10 footer at similar weight to start out and loved it.... you can progress surfing on it, I had some real fun on the halo even in solid waves. the 10 footer tracks well for flat water too... if you are local to atlantis definitely worth a look and demo. I have moved on to shorter boards but recently picked up a naish nalu 11 footer which is also a great flat water/small surf option at a higher price point... surfs a bit better as is narrower but for starting out I'd strongly recommend the halo.

I think i am in the same boat...Wanting to get a sup that i can sail and that the rest of the family can play on.

I'm about 80kg and surf an 8' mal and was looking at a sup that would be a bit of a family all rounder (wife, 2 young boys). We'll use it at Anglesea, Point RoadKnight and in the Bay.

I was thinking of the 10'6 nalu but might look at the mana 9'6 as the rest of the family could still paddle it easily.

i have a question though, how do these boards windsurf? I have not windsurfed for many years, are they ok for a bit of a blast up to 15 knots?

Any higher than that and I'll pinch my brother's boards.

They do work.. You might need to change the fin if you want to go upwind.

Hi Matt 55 ..if you are looking to windsurf ...them ..the mana 9.5 ' doesn't have the mast base insert ..it s mainly for surf .
the Nalu GT 10.6 ,11' and 11' 4 are your best options in the naish range .they windsurf ok ...( but not as good as a windsurf board)I don't take them out over 15 knot as I don't
like windsurfing without foot straps when the wind really starts blowing .but non planing and cruising around and learning the basics they are fine and fun .ok to muck around in the surf with a small sail too.
we have the 11.4 and the 11' in our family the 11.4 sails alot faster ,as the 11' has alot more rocker .the 11' is .better for waves .as the 10.6.
10.6 Nalu GT . would be the best choice for your weight .and surfs like a long board .which you would enjoy more being a long boarder.
i use the 11' most of the time @96 kgs.

Actually the 10'10" Nalu like shown in my vid windsurfs the best..

Must be the channels on the bottom or something..

tried the mana 9'5" and 10 ' yesterday and really liked them but since it is my first board a bit hesitant about buying a new board as they are quite expensive . There doesn't seem to be many if any second hand Manas around . Any feedback on starboard or fanatic boards or any other decent brands ?????

Thanks

The Adventure Sixty Forty 9'4 or 10'0 is worth considering

Thanks for the replies guys, I'll probably take one (naish nalu 10.6) out for a paddle soon.

Saw one in a shop recently and was surprised by the light weight...things have come a long way.

I have a horrible feeling this may not stop at one board

What size board are the woman and child riding in this video, what is the price and would you ship to South Australia?
