Some advice would be great....
Only ever travelling to Hawaii with surfboards previously, I'm contemplating the merits of carting a SUP to Waikiki (and road trips to North Shore / Makaha etc) in April / May or hiring boards whilst there.
I'd prefer to be on my own board as most of us would but the thought of excess luggage costs, airport transfers, hotel storage has got me wondering whether it's worth the hassle when hire boards would be available for the most part.
Also, any knowledge of baggage fee's for SUP's travelling Hawaiian Airlines from / to Sydney ?
Would really appreciate any comments or feedback.

Hawaiian charge $100 per SUP, They never seem to worry about Clubbie Boards or 9 foot mals
Hi - was there last December - $20 per hour on the beach - one block back from the DUKE statue is a hire place on the corner, but behind the Hyatt Sheraton, only 50 metres away from the corner is a great place where you can negotiate hourly and daily hire - paddles are a bit ordinary but easier than waiting at the airport.
A great place to SUP on the north shore is Puaeena point (Haleiwa)
I hired a longboard from Big Wave Daves Koa Ave, good to deal with had a lot of SUPs . 
As TB said,funny you hire a board on the beach for 20 an hour or walk one block back and hire for about 20 per day.

Check out Robert Stehlik at Blue Planet Surf for hire. They have their own blue planet brand and Starboards too.
They do hotel delivery and pick up.
Robert and Jeff Chang have a regular Hawaii Kai training group that does DW runs conditions permitting, race board surfing, technique sessions etc. Really nice crew.
Some hotels have sup and board storage, some you need your own locks too
Some hotels you need to give them to the porter each time and tip them.
There are good hire boards at turtle bay.
If you get a hire car to take your board around the island with soft racks make sure it doesn't have a center aerial, you can't get your board on
All the hire boards at wakiki are long and wide
Theres lots of sup waves to go and find too.

I was on Maui and you could rent boards either daily or weekly and you could take it back and swap it during the day. Having said that I will probably take mine on the next trip
Ok. I just went up to Hawaiian check in(I work at Sydney International and they are one of my customers) and asked the service desk what the regulations are. You are allowed 2 bags per person at 30kg each, plus a board as your free check in luggage.

Nice wave! How many people did you have to fight to get that wave - or is it friendly and relatively uncrowded where you were? I had not even contemplated going for a surf trip to Hawaii...
Check out http://www.hawaiisurfboardrentals.com. I hired surfboards from them on a trip and now they do SUP. The service is fantastic, they drop off and pick up to you accommodation. If you hire for more than a few days they will pick up from anywhere on Oahu. They will also swap out boards if you want to try something else. The most amazing service. I was impressed with there range, service and the condition of the boards.
If you have wheels, Surftech hire SUPs from Ala Moana (At least they did a couple of years ago).

Another massive thumbs up for hawaiisurfboardrentals.com. I have rented mals from Dan on 3-4 different trips, great service. I am also considering grabbing a SUP off him when I head over again on April.
Instead of turning right at Haleiwa to the North Shore,turn left at the round about head down past Waialua to the Mokalea stretch,no crowds , gets a bit more exposure to the trades , but again no crowds.

I went to Waikiki and heleiwa last month - for a few days Waikiki was 5ft plus so no one on he beach would hire out sups and the surf was bigger than most beginners could cope with, hence not that busy out on canoes etc But when the swell dropped later in the week look out it was surf carnage with so many people and I was very worried for my board (priorities) and wish I had had a hire board!!
In the end I was really glad to take my board 8'5" sunova speeed (love this board so much) as I really got to enjoy it every day - flew qantas though no probs - the board was packaged up like a Christmas present see photo - thanks Sam at balmoral sup who took time out of his day to help me with it ( the packaging is now under the garage for next time)
I stayed at outrigger and left my board in the board /luggage room and the bellhops just waved me in and out 3 times a day - i do wonder how often boards get nicked - I thought oh well travel insurance !!
Anyway you will have a blast either way- make sure you go to Haleiwa joes and have some awesome fish for dinner - if you need somewhere to stay in Haleiwa with kids or without pm me I know a good place on the river....

Crowds I'm not looking forward to, but it seems there are lots of breaks to spread them out a bit. Hopefully a couple of days of a little size might be the answer!

I took my own. No extra charge with Hawaiian Airlines.
Glad I did
Also yoga mats from Target top and bottom, $4 each and weigh only a few grams, perfect to double up the thickness of your bag without any weight gain

hired one last week and have another booked for this week. Drop off and pickup from the hotel. I did pay for one of their premium boards and it was in really good condition.
