G'day guys I'm booked with a few mates on a boat trip to the ments in early August. I'm taking a couple of short boards and plan on taking my JP Surf 8'2"

From those that have been (as I haven't) what can I expect SUP wise, is it worth it or should I just take another short board.?

There will be some spots where you can ride your SUP, but take 2 shortboards for sure... Take 2 paddles if you have them, just in case one snaps.. The waves are so perfect you might just ride your shorty.

I took my 7'10 this time last year, even tho I ride a shortboard 1% of the time in Aus I ended up on my shorty 80-90% of the trip. Only due to crowds.

I SUPed: burger worlds, A-frames, beng beng, pitstops.

You'll have a sick time

Cheers thanks guys. I'm starting to think just taking my shorts boards will be the better option. Like you Pohaku I rarely ride my shots boards nowadays.

I haven't ridden a short board since forever, but unless your third short-board is really unique (and thus you would miss it if you didn't take it), or taking a sup would be a real hassle, I would definitely take my sup.

I just got back from the Ments, Took my 7.3ft Vbox and had heaps of fun, rode my shorty 80% of the time due to crowd situation and the type of wave we surfed, il post some pictures over the weekend.

Hey Bender, I took two SUP's and two shorties on last trip (well documented by the crew on here) and I think there are a few things to consider such as are you on a boat or land based? Also who are the other surfers you are going with?
Last trip we did was a boat trip to Telos with the whole crew dedicated to SUP so we were able to pick the best destinations that suited us.
I also had some great sessions on the shorties but 80% was SUP.

If its a boat trip you are on and you are going with hard core name break chasing barrell hunters, I wouldn't bother with the SUP as you will be surfing more crowded gnarly waves and you probably want short anyway. You will also definitely want a spare back up shorty as boards break very often!!!
Also be sure to take a decent step up!!

If the crew you are going with are more relaxed, then the skipper can seek out awesome waves less crowded and then you would love to have the SUP on hand.
Also if you are land based there can also be wave options less crowded where again the SUP is epic.
2 trips ago when I was just getting in to SUP i scored epic A frames all to myself for 3 hours! (with a borrowed SUP from the surf camp)

I am going again this year for a 3 week stay at Macaronis Camp with just a short board quiver, as I can't be bothered lugging 4 shorties, and then the SUP and paddles as well.

Sorry for the long reply but I hope it helps.....either way you will get the best waves you have ever had!!

Hi Bender
just got back from Lohis Maldives. Took SB and sup but just used the SB. At home I rarely SB but had a ball on it. I found lugging a sup around was a pain in the arse.

Hi bender.!
have been to ments on 5 boat trips but the last 2 have been with SUP and shortie.
all my trips have been in off season as its gets just to busy .(off is dec- March)
have had plenty of swell ranging between chest height and double plus overhead but there are some waves that are not to SUP friendly and as you carnt duck dive a sup you may as well surf your shortie on these occasion.
I did find if your surfing on a sup most of the time and only ride your short board rarely you might struggle with surf fitness as you do a lot of paddling over the 10-14 days even if you are surf fit.
The good thing is that you can go surf some good waves on a SUP that most shot board surfers wouldn't bother with compared to the quality of the name breaks
Also I took 2- shot boards 6'8" - 6'1" both pintails and 8'2" SuP.
good luck and hope you have a ball.
P/S watch out for the coral.

Thanks for that Oneteam, yeh the 6"5' channel bottom pintail and 6"2' Pintail are already packed. If the SUP doesn't go I have a 6"10" Pintail to.

Hi one team, would you take this SUP in those type of waves like Gland where I'plan to go after stayilng in Bali to fit myself before attempting to land on Kong's reef with this board
As I'm 78kg, should I shape it a bit bigger what your opinion , please?
If you read me Dogman what's your opinion too, please again because I have been impressed by the last boards you show in an other topic

hi there Kami!
What's the length of your new board.?
Have surfed a short board at G-Land but not SUPed there yet.
It is a very fast down the line wave that you need to be able to get off the bottom and gets boogying as you will find getting court inside could be hard work getting back out as you will get dragged down the line.
it will probably be quite amusing to the surfer watching Though.
i would probably suggest keeping the tail pulled in as you would a gun surfboard.
if doggy has given you some suggestions on what to have then I would go with that as he knows what he's talking about.
i did have a few mates go there a couple of years ago and they said there was a SUP surfer sitting right out the back taking the bombs and they were quite impressed.
good luck and hope you don't take to much skin off your backside. ( ha ha )
cheers .!!

Hello oneteam, this board is a 7'11" 26.3" around 89 liters. Just enough buoyancy to float my weight to be just as a big surfboard with a paddle. It will weight around 7 with AB2 fins, no grip I will wax it because I must paddle proned way out.
My only experience of the Indonesian waves is at impossible's which is a fast down the line wave but I imagine less thicker than GLand. You right about pulling in rails and stay higher as I can through sections. Otherwise I will give some amusement to the proned gallery and surely may lost some skin and ego, you bluddy right

my last work on the tail to give more bite to hold and still loose to avoid bottom and keeping some tail volume to enter the wave early while paddling .
Wishing Dogman should give me some advice about too.

Hi there Kami
iam not sure if the lightness of board is that important in waves like G- Land.
a little weight might not be a bad thing.
my board at the moment is a deep ocean 8'x27" and 95 lit.
imy weight is about 88 kg plus 4x3 wetsuit with boots as its cold down here in Vico Australia .
all up in the water I am probably 95 kegs which make for a bit of time spent in the water.!! Ha ha
Dont be scared to stretch the length of the board out as you will need a bit of rhythm up if it got size And that's
hard on a board with low volume - length.
