Hey,

Sorry for another post about locations.

Have just moved to Auckland and while have found heaps of great areas for my 14' can anyone recommend the closest place or within reasonable distance from the CBD to get out on some waves??

Thanks in advance.

Loads of waves out West and when a decent swell comes through the islands or from the North the east coast lights up (not very often though). Believe it or not but there are some nice waves on the North Shore in the right conditions but out West at the 4 main beaches you will have no shortage of swell - just wind to deal with. A few people will not be happy to see you so make sure you are good sport in the water. Enjoy.

A few not so secret spots in here

Check out Piha and Murawai on the West Coast. When the east swell happens - not that often- check out Omaha and Tawharanui or even Te Arai. Surfers are generally ok as long as you don't hog all the waves and call the sets for them.

Mate,
Have a look at Orewa, Red beach and some of the bays north, there is also a small island thats off Waiwera that's worth a look. Whangaparoa has nice offshore reefs just out towards army bay. All these breaks work on big northerly swells and storm surf during winter as the fronts push through, wait for the off shore wind change which is from the SW then get out there as the surf only last normally 24 hrs, all east coast breaks including the North Shore beaches and bays as already mentioned and within 1/2 hr from the Queen st either side of peak hr. Your 14 footer will be perfect for down winding around the Hauraki Gulf, just be careful with the shipping lanes and currents and tides.
