I've been flat water SUPing for a while now and would like to try some SUP Surfing.
Where is a good spot to try this in the Adelaide area?
You could always head down sth to middleton or goolwa.
Southport and Moana beach is perfect for beginners. rolling , soft waves that wont hurt you when you wipe-out.
remember to wear your legrope, so when you wipe out your sup doesn't hurt anyone .
It's a perfect place to learn IMO, small predictable waves and never gets very big. Your right it can be a bum fight but that's because a few people that have no surf etiquette are ruining it for everyone!
I think the term is "bun fight" and adding more beginners to the mix at u turns will certainly cause one.Remember most of these people have been surfing a while ,a lot coming through the ranks of longboarding or shortboarding.Go find a nice little wave, softer, mushy no problem.Over a sand bottom, reasonably shallow Southport,Moana ,or down South .Learn to read the wave ,etiquette, and the basic skills .How and where to take off, getting out past the break and turning around ,paddling in sideshore and chop. Then learn to turn the board and cut back,What to do when it gets bigger.Find someone who can surf to team up with,to show you the basics.
I live very close to all the breaks in the Mid,and I have seen it get ugly between surfers and sups(I do both)and these are experienced people.Throw beginners in to this, even if it is all sups and it probably won't be pretty.Uturns can be a steep take off over reef bottom ,with a lot of crew who know the drill( it gets ugly even then occasionally). So don't harsh your mellow, get your chops down ,and then head out to where the experienced crew go.
Nice work Serpeant !
The Mid coast Surfing Reserve is the stretch of Port Noarlunga to Moana. All the big wave energy is blocked by Kangaroo Island.
The mouth of the Onkaparinga & South port beach is a spectacular area & both flat water paddling & some little bumps on occasion.

Priority number one to you and others is your safety & leash and the right of way rules. You will soon realise not everyone abides by these rules & ruin it for everyone. The Australian word for these types are : WANKERS. They have endless reasons why they are allowed to be selfish too.
Forget them, surf just the wave , be in just that moment.

I don't recommend you head Down South to Middleton or Goolwa, as you are not accustomed to rows of whitewater. When your skills develop you can try some of the fattest waves around on that side of the coast and sit in a crowd. Avoid Waitpinga / Parsons. Beautiful beaches, just at a different level.
Over time you can take a road trip with your SUP & find empty waves to yourself.
I would also suggest popping over to SA SUP CREW : www.facebook.com/groups/160314413996037
You will find others like yourself & very experienced crew in all facets of ocean paddling, they are a wealth of knowledge.
Enjoy the activity, its about having fun.

I went down to Southport today.
It was a nice spot but a little windy.
Because of the wind, getting the large boards down to the beach was awkward!
U turns is the go for sure. You can stay wide in the north channel. Its forgiving and generally the crowd is nice. Just be open, honest and courteous.
Go a road trip to long beach, robe. Great, gentle beach break with plenty of space and without the constant white water of Middleton
