Trying to maintain the stoke through a Tasmanian Winter.
Anyone offer an opinion on the benefits of compression wear (eg 2xu) vs Sharkskin type material for winter paddling.
i want something I won't freeze in if I get wet, but won't cook in if I stay dry

My 2 cents, I was lucky enough to be part of a trial of compression gear back in 2002 within my workplace and the effect on recovery was significant for all involved compared to those without. I have used it ever since, especially for recovery, and feel there is a difference between brands specifically with regards smell and longevity of compression.

On the preference of brand argument, I am lucky enough to work with a brand called VIRUS and their StayWarm line of compression is fantastic. Price point is better also. If anybody would like some I go just send me a message.

Please keep in mind that compression wear and sharkskin chillproof or vaikobi heatshield are 2 very completely products. Both the sharkskin and vaikobi are designed to keep you warm and breath at the same time. Both these products are also water repellent to reduce wind chill.

I thought Taswegians were a hardy bunch that only wore loin clothes whilst in the water in winter.

I run a Sharkskin long sleeve shirt in the colder months in the NW Tas waters. But it's the one with the full zip - this way as you start to heat up I find it's as simple as unzipping a bit. If you need to take it off completely, again, it's a lot easier with the full zip rather than trying to pull a fairly skin tight garment off over your head whilst maintaining balance.

I bought a pair of these a couple of years ago, and have never worn them.
They are now buried beneath other paddling clothes in my tub of stuff.
I know why now.

Opinion based on the "look" of a 55 y.o. man wearing skin tight cycling gear on a paddleboard.
Maybe you can carry it off!
I certainly couldn't - horrified the daughters
I wear a wetsuit and get wet if too hot.

Lol, time will tell if I carry it off at 56 and it crossed my mind but I am yet to see a loose fit wet suit and I will be totally covered?

Just wear a pair of boardies on top. That's what most people do. My black billabong boardies go well.

I don't SUP surf so I can't comment, but a wetty at any other time would be hell. I used my (prone) surfing wetty once or twice when i first started SUP paddling as I didn't have any other option back then. It was the tail end of winter and I was still getting used to a race board too so there was a high probability of falling in back then.

Yeah, tights only would be tough to pull off anywhere.

I pull my tights off at home. I've never tried any where else. It shouldn't much harder.

Just found this video about Vaikobi.

They're from Sydney but they seem to be pretty international going by the video dialogue and also subtitles.

I have used them a couple of times now in pretty cold weather and they do the job well, keeps me warm enough and compression is good too I come in because I can't feel my toes even with some foot wear.
