Anyone interested in coming to Maui for downwinding this race season... holidaying, or just some fun paddling? Looking for tips, info, boards etc...?
I'm an Aussie who moved here last year and if I can help with sorting connections on Maui for you, holler and I'll see what I can do
Cheers Barb
We've had a great winter so far for surfing. There have been some amazing NW swells with beautiful light-wind days. I live right across the road from Jaws, and about 10mins up the road from Maliko Gulch. As for downwinding, Kihei on the southside of the island has a really fun run. It is a little difficult to get it with exactly the right wind direction - but when you do, its such a hoot and very manageable for beginner and novice paddlers also. Its been blowing the fleas off my dog here lately with 50mph + winds on the North Shore, the Maliko run has been going off.. but a little bit too much at the moment.
I can keep you posted with a few updates on whats going on over here! Maui is such an amazing place, hope you make it over here soon... you only live once.
hi,coming over to spend 10 days from 27th of april to do maliko, staying at maui seaside in kahului (first timer), any tips would be a big help
Can you be a bit more specific about the info that would be helpful to you...? is it about the Maliko Run itself.. or logistics stuff? Do you have a board?
yes about maliko run, is there some one on the run most of the time when conditions suit, just looking for company on the first couple of runs to help get it worked out and yes i do have a board organised and thanks for any help you can give
The below link has been an ongoing thread on Stand Up Zone for last couple of years... Have a look through some of the posts, it has lots of info for beginner/novice downwinders on Maliko Run. I just found it the other day and it has been really helpful for me also. You are very welcome to give Bill and I a call when you get here, and come on runs with us and our crew..
Send me an email through our website and I can give you our local contact details, and any other local info you might need

How you doing Lacey...? I see the weather is pretty wild at home. Not much better here! We had flash-flooding warnings yesterday as there is soooo much rain dumping down on Haleakala Crater - the run off onto the lower lying areas was nuts!!!!
Windy as snot but a bit too wild at moment for downwinding - hoping the weekend will be good! It's 6am here as I write, and heading off the Kihei this morning to find some sunshine.
They are saying we might have snow on the Crater today, looking forward checking it out....
You should get your ass over here.. its an amazing place... a must experience!!! Stay in touch
Of course I remember you, its Phil isn't it?
How's the weather back home? Looking forward to a smokin' season here.. when do you think you'll be over this year?
I was just over south shore this morning.. beautiful sunshine. Now back on windward side...Man its raining cats and dogs here.... just waiting for the cows and horses to start falling outa the sky too... oh well at least the vege garden is enjoying the soaking :-)
Just got an email from my mates on Maui Nuking trades here in the islands ... 7 days in a row of 40+ mph with gusts as high as 60. Maliko is all time. Plus the lucky buggers have got front row seats to SANTANA for tuesday night I'm sooo jealous SANTANA are my favourite band
Yes Please Mr Wizard
Hey Phil... I'm sure you'll make up for it when you get here by the looks of that photo of you downing an ale or 2!
The ocean is red with the run-off from freshly ploughed can fields. Looks pretty bad, but I'm sure it won't put the brave at heart or desperate off doing Maliko Runs! I'm going southside tomorrow, hopefully paddle cleaner water and catch an early downwinder from Sugar Beach.
Hi Barb, the family and I are over in July from Perth, including 11 nights on Maui. Would love a paddle, especially Maliko. Thanks for the links you posted, will need a board and accommodation if you have any suggestions, thanks. Cheers Ian.
Hi Ian.. you can touch base with me through our website www.foote-surfboards.com and we can correspond via email. That way we can to and fro with information specific to what you're needing. Look forward hearing from you
Hi Barb,
I'm arriving at Sprecksville 28th March and in town until the 11th April before heading back to Waikiki for my wife to do some shopping for a few days - a small price to pay for getting away with 13 days of windsurfing and SUPing on Maui :)
I have access to a mates SIC 17' so hope to get a few morning downwinders in before hitting Sprecks and Ho'okipa for afternoon windsurfing.
Are there any scheduled Downwinder events on during that time ? would be good to catch up and get some local knowledge too ... we were there last year for 2 weeks so have the best strong coffee sussed in Paia - our morning ritual start to the day :)
Cheers
Dave
Hey Dave, there might be a couple downwind events run out of Maliko Gulch by some of the local canoe clubs during that time, I'll check and get back to you with what's on. I will be on Kauai when you are here, but if you need some extra friends to go downwinding with, let me know and I will send you some local contacts. Did you look at one of my first posts in this thread re: SUZone link for Maliko Run info? If you can't find it, let me know I'll send it again. Best to stay in touch with me on info@foote-surfboards.com - Barb
