Cannot wait to check out NZ doing the south island in Feb is it easy to hire boards.
not that easy,
depending on where you land and leave from you could rent one from a shop in the main centers, if you are landing in Christ church hit up one of the local shops there for a rental

Just got back from 2 weeks in the South Island. The coast north of Kiakora looked awesome. There were some right handers that went forever (well several hundred metres) just before the seal colony at Ohau Waterfall.
Maungamaunu (hope my spelling is right) just north of Kaikoura is great.......there are things in the water......seals and maybe things hunting seals lol
Quite a long point break........just a few hundred yards south of that is "meatworks"....a munchier break :)
