Anyone out there mucked around with different fin set ups for the fanatic allwave?

I've got the 8'10", love it and find it turns pretty good for a SUP with a 76 kg beginner like me in control. I've been using the standard fins, 5" on the sides, slightly bigger centre fin.

I tried running slightly smaller side fins (just standard future fins I have for a shortboard) and couldn't believe the difference it made - only 5 or 6 mm smaller fins and the thing just turned like a dog with them in, i found it noticeably a lot harder to turn, even just paddling around in circles. On the waves it was like driving a truck, yuck.

I wouldn't mind experimenting with larger side fins but wonder whats already been tried - anyone out there got any advice before i burn cash on stupid options?

What about changing the centre fin, what works, what doesn't?

Cheers in advance

about halfway through this thread from standupzone there's some discussion of different fins for the Allwave:

Maybe try Surfstitch for the JM and Solus sets, perhaps Shapers has something similar.

I just got a set of shapers Jackson close fins for my allwave and they are awesome.
Really loosened up the rear end and they are also a bit cheaper than the futures.

They are slightly smaller sides than the original allwave fins and the rear fin is slightly smaller than the side fins.

There are several previous threads on just this subject in Seabreeze.
If I was a smarter computer user than I am I could direct you but someone else will have to do that.

I surf a 9'6" All Wave and run standard side fins but an 8" FCS Dolphin as the centre fin.
This suits me and my type of surfing. Others prefer smaller.

Cheers.

Thanks guys thats given me a bit to think about. interesting that the Jacksons side fins are slightly smaller than the Fanatic standards but still go alright for you JasonR - what size is your Allwave?

And do you run the centre fin all the way forward in the slot? That's how i have the centre fin, i find that keeps it pretty loose.

will have a search again for previous threads on this topic

I have a 9'1" allwave. I have the rear fin about 5cm from the from of the box.
I had the standard fin all the way forward buti much prefer these new fins.

My advice for a beginner would just be to use a single 8" - 9" fin, as far forward in the box as possible.

Tri fin, thruster, or quad setups are great once you know you to push enough on your legs in your turns to actually push against the side fins. Till then, your turn will be made more by tilting the board on the rail and have the deflected water flow pull the board inside the turn, the fin acting as arrow feathers and turning the boards to follow the hull. In this mode, the fin acts as a pivot, and the single pivot point of the single fin will make the board feel more lively than a cluster of fins that will seem to "block" the board. Note that twin fins work well too, they give both a single pivot point and grip on the rail.

So: just go single mate, only go thruster when you begin to really push in turns, you will then feel the single slightly loosing grip in turns, this will be the sign that you are ready for a thruster.

interesting colas - I've never though about that before.

Actually I've been surfing and riding surfboards kitesurfing for a long time - only new to the SUP, so reakon I know how to turn a thruster.

But come to think of it I've never really ridden a single fin, I reakon i should give one a go - and changing one fin in the SUP will be the easiest way to do that so I'll give it a bash and see

cheers for the tips everyone, appreciated

Twin Truames fibreglass 7.5" sidebiters with an FCS Fluid Foils Dolphin (any size, I use an 8") middle for quick adjustment in the water (Ball bearing grip). Works for me in some very steep beachbreaks and mushier point breaks. Been thinking of trying the 9'2" 2012 model as a twin fin. Anyone had a go of that set up?? The sidebiters hold into some walls I thought I would be skating down sideways at 105kg .

Yes, you should try a single fin, you may be surprised by how fast and smooth your board will feel. I started surfing when Mark Richards was pushing his twin fins, and I always though single fins a thing of the past. I was surprised when I discovered single fins recently in SUPing...

I have an Allwave 8'11 and have arched the point where the standard fins are holding me back. I reckon those shapers fins look good for loosing them up. Has anyone tried other options that they have liked. I am about 70kg and want to tighten up the turns.

Any advice would be appreciated
