Interesting to see the Hawaiians pull out? But doesn't matter cause the Aussies are going to kick butt over there anyway!

thats a bit odd they are the only country to be given double the chance yet choose not to....and then in therory the USA team could have been made stronger with the Hawians maybe.....

Nothing official... just that it was a "Last minute cancellation". Probably a few reasons - logistics, money, conflicting events & obligations, etc.

Cool to see so many random nations show up. Pretty much all of those countries have good paddlers (a few big dark horses in some of the Euro teams... especially France).

Though there's obviously only a few countries that will get close to winning the overall trophy, so I say pick one of the minnows and go for them as well.

It'll be like the cricket world cup where someone like the Netherlands pulls off a crazy upset against England off the final ball :O

Ireland gets my vote, just because >>> they had to train in the dark <<<

OK I'll be the crash test dumby how do Prone Paddlers end up in the Stand Up Paddle event?

Why is there a 20km marathon event when 90% of races are BOP / Technical?

Why is the marathon board size limited to 14ft?

I would say most races arew distance based not bop. Limit on board size could be logistics.and I guess its a paddle board event aswell.jordy mercewr bewtter get on her bike she raced the ironwomen series today.

I thought they limited the marathon board to 12'6" at this one. Has that changed?

im a bit confused.......with all the confusion

Chris has showed all the events in the first post. Clearly its not just surfing. They are trying to cover the main sides of SUP: Surf, tech race (bop) and long distance (DW) Prone has been attached to it as well as it is gaining popularity and respect (well deserved)

Both the BoP-style "technical course" (4.5km) and the long distance "marathon" (18km) will be 12'6" only.

The ISA was originally considering 14' for the long distance, but pretty quickly realised it wouldn't work out.

Lots of detailed info here:

Always interesting how Hawaii is seperate to USA, isn't that kinda like double dippin.
Maybe we should put in a team from that little country below Vic.
Is that Ian "kanga" Cairns I see there as USA official

Why does the WCT and subsequent tour events distinguish its surfers as from the USA or Hawaii? Last I looked Hawaii was our 50th state and part of the United States of America. Thanks. (asked by Michael)

Vans Triple Crown contest director Randy Rarick explains:

Traditionally, prior to statehood ('59), Hawaii was considered a separate entity in the old Makaha Championship and Peru International -- and even the U.S. Championships in Huntington Beach.

For purposes of distinguishing those surfers who were from the US mainland (both east and west coast), they were designated USA and those from the islands were obviously designated Hawaii. There were separate surfing associations as well.

Tradition and heritage carried on after statehood and subsequently it was decided to keep the surfing locales different, even though Hawaii became part of the USA. That tradition has carried over even into the pro ranks and is accepted practice worldwide.
