One for GizzieNZ or any other Gisborne lurkers really but checking spots for July school holidays in and around Gizzy. Probably going to rent a house on or near Wainui beachfront. Don't know Gizzy at all, is Wainui beach a good spot for surf SUP? Probably looking at nearer the south end. Any other spots I should be considering? Makorori? Will have some 3 - 9 year olds and her indoors in tow also so need to consider family needs in addition to my selfish pursuits... thanks for any tips.

Wainui Beach a lovely spot to holiday on....a nice clean sandy beach. About three or four minutes drive to the north is Makorori Beach and Makorori Point......which is great for all kinds of surfing (the point and rocky reefs provide more stable and predictable breaks than wainui beach itself)
Ten minutes drive south you are back at town beach which is more sheltered than wainui/mak in big swells. In between wainui and town at sponge bay you have Tuamotu Island (advanced surfers only).
One hour south of giz you have Mahia with a multitude of breaks.
Many surf spots one hour north of giz also that are offshore when southerly onshore in giz.
Wainui is a nice beach in the middle of many many surf options :)

with 3 to 9 year olds maybe town beach (waikanae/midway) best for children splashing around in the shallows.....tamer surf (unless its big of course)

Kia ora and kapai, awesome thanks guys, and Towball I know its gonna be horrible but we're coming anyway :) Probably staying at a house with Stock Route right outside the front door, even if its a bit grunty for SUP - hopefully its on the smaller side. Makorori sounds great but might be limited to dawnies straight outside the house before family are up and I start to burn brownies. Having said that, have wheels so we'll see. Coming from Wellys so fully equipped with neoprene :) And thanks Gizzie for all the spot tips, will be at mercy of family and wind to an extent so nice to know the options. I'll give Sponge Bay the swerve, I'm still finding my surf SUP feet. Cheers Gary

Makorori is anabsolutely sic spot, great locals when I was there too. Have you surfed Lyall when its been big Gary? I wish that I SUP'd when I was living there at home, although I don't miss the instant ice-cream headaches I used to get when you paddle through your first wave when prone surfing

Hey flyingkiwi, yes surfed Lyall today in fact was head and half high, nice sunny day, of course the welly wind got into it later on, got 2 seshs in, not sure how i managed that on mums day! Lyall bay is where we normally go, and titahi bay. Wellingtons not exactly surf city, and when there is a wave its typically a zoo out there. But usually well behaved animals.
