Hi Guys, new to posting in the standup forum but long time follower lol..
Just wondering if anyone uses a gps while they are on the water and can anyone recomend a decent one.. Either wrist mount or board mount..
looking forward to hearing some responses
Hi AUS,
I use the Suunto Ambit 2. One of the best purchases i have ever made and also handy for keeping time in the surf etc.
Good looking watch too. Also use it for running, cycling, swimming etc.
I use MapMyWalk on my iPhone in a waterproof case. Just make sure you keep it in a pocket it can't fall out of!
Total cost was $12 I think for case & App.
I use (& am v happy with) the garmin forerunner 310xt. It has way more functionality than i need or comprehend (combined with their web offering, garminconnect) & watch/instrument seems to be up to rigors of sup. Not suitable as everyday watch though... here in SA it was cheapest gps/time keeping option available.
I have yet to find a waterproof cell-phone case that survives (as a waterproof case) more than a months paddling.
I've lost 2 iphones to the surf and salt water using Lifeproof cases, they failed after about a year :/
I'll never take my phone in the water again, this is my decision. Not the Minister of War and Finances decision
Looking for options now to track my sessions.
Just get a waterproof case for your iphone and download the Navionics Marine app
I use this, but not in the surf!
If you use an Iphone in a case, in the surf, well......
Budget version. Garmin Forerunner10, about $120. Fully water proof, have used mine open water swimming, surfing and supping. Nothing fancy but shows where you've been and basic data on speed, laps etc. Wear it on my wrist while supping. On a string and tucked in behind my neck, under rashie or wetsuit, behind my neck when surfing.
This fellow does great reviews on all gps related stuff.

This mornings effort, down south, below. Bit skeptical about the 56 km/hr! Some fast waves but not that fast I'm sure.
I've also had a few iPhone case's fail.. Now I use a Pelican case.. There's no chance of it failing.
Has anyone got or had a hitcase for the iPhone, thinking of getting one as you can use it to take vid or pics while fully waterproof. Wondering if anyone has had one fail?
At present I wrap the phone in three glad sandwich bags and to this day haven't had an issue and have had it underwater for sometime on the odd Occasion.
Another Suunto Ambit fan.
I got the first Ambit for over a year now and it very easy to use and offers great the HR belt in there own program movescount.I train SUPracing with it and its perfect to analyse your paddle technique as you see speed and heartrate but also breathing and speed all coming together.
The only downtrade is that its hard to program with waypoints for routes but makes it up with being full surf (100m) waterproof.

DJ - it doesn't look like you access the phone buttons in this case. Is this for GPS only or do use it for a phone as well, like when you're sitting out on a buoy or something?
The key advantage of the Rip Curl search GPS watch is that it will automatically identify when you are actually surfing, as opposed to paddling around, during your session, and enable you to log all sorts of info around your session - waves caught, distance of each wave, speeds, max speed, overlay onto maps. Also the app or website can maintain a full log of surf conditions (tide, swell, wind, etc) for each session, and you can have a record of your quiver and what is being used on the day, attach pics etc... and share it all with your friends. Developed for surfing but works for SUPs. Truly waterproof in surf (well you can only say resistant according to the ACCC). RC has been making waterproof/resistant surf watches for a very long time (and a lot of the development went into ensuring this was safe in the surf).
Disclaimer - I work for Rip Curl, but am personally very excited about this product no matter where it comes from. Pricing to be $499.
Forerunner 10 by far best $150 spent does all what the other watches do except heart rate for a fraction of the price
Hi,
I got a Garmin Fenix2, it records Cadence (strokes/minute).
See above pic of Cadence and speed graphs. (accelerometer in watch records SPM stokes or steps per minute- there's also accelerometer on in heart-rate monitor (but I find the watch accelerometer records better). Had on wrist and on PFD on chest and found better readings on wrist.
Features I use for SUP. Cadence, Speed, Heart-rate, Sunrise/Sunset times, Tide times (via hunting fishing function), Vibrating alarm, for early morning wake-ups without waking the misuss, (better than phone on vibrate). Looks like a normal watch, although it is 13mm high by almost 50mm diameter, it is light.
Also has Multiple world time zones, Temperature, altitude, barometric pressure, vertical speed.
Receives text messages and can be use for live tracking (with iphone 4s and above, bummer I got a iphone 4)
For waterproof case for Iphone 4, Ive been using a Aquapac which has served me well for a few years. Ive used it with my phone on a couple of Downwinders which I spent more time in the water than on the board. Couldn't say if or when it would fail though. From Witworths store

FR 15 now gives you the heart rate for not much more....same watch, just upgraded.
I have a garmin 910XT and love it
However sometimes not really able to cope with the water when you fall from your board and the heart rate monitor strap or you lycra becomes too wet
So I will try this very soon as you don't need the chest strap anymore.http://www.highlytunedathletes.com.au/Soleus-GPS-Pulse-BW.html
They have the same version for half the price with no GPS and no data upload to the computer
or look at the new Tom Tom it looks pretty alright
