This is impressive... sets an inspring example



I've heard (and tried) when you're getting to the end of your reserves, puffing your cheeks in/out (without exhaling) moves the co2 around, and mental relaxation is key

Your tips/things that work for you?

Once upon a time when i was a non smoker i could hold for 3 Min static underwater ie just floating.Swim length of a 50m pool underwater.I think the world record for just holding your breath static is around 9min amazing.Relaxing is the key , this type of activity though is extremely dangerous , shallow water blackout!You should never hyper ventillate before doing it and never alone.

Hey Laurie, why is Seabreeze turning Google links into some other crap? Grrr!

I was told about big wave surfers taking "sips" during long hold downs to ease the urge to breathe. I reckon on the first "sip" you would cough your lungs out and drown. If you could control your breathing well enough to sip then surely you could control the breathing reflex and just not breathe until you come up.

I have heard of people counting during long hold downs. That mega-hold down usually only lasts for 20-30 seconds.

Well when you think about it, What is big a Hawaiian swell 17-20 second period so a 2 wave hold down 40-50 secs,It's just learning to relax that's the hard part so you don't consume the oxygen in your blood, its all in ya head.

I remember watching David Blaine (on Oprah, sorry) do over 17mins. The record's been smashed by a swiss - Peter Colat 19mins 21secs!!!

Most experts reckon that sort of time is not good for your brain & highly discourage it. I've found that if I'm calm I can get around 2.5 - 3mins...don't know how they could do nearly 20mins!

My best is a 3.30 static and half that in the water, those free divers rock.

Maybe the best way to do it would be to hold your breath in shallow water while your mates dragged you around by your legs, shook you, hit you with surfboards and kicked you or bounced you off the bottom. If you could still hold your breath for 2 mins during this you'd probably be ready for a good hold down in big surf.

Nothing more frightening and I have heard of people counting while under water to make time slow down a little, what you thought was a 60 second hold down may have only been 20 seconds......

Le Grand Bleu is a great film.

I originally saw it way back when you could get the US version which had Jacques being rescued by a dolphin... years later I saw the original euro verson which was a bit different.

Sure have many times, always first in mind when someone asks for my favourite film.

In regards to holding your breath my bro is a keen fisho and (was free diver) who lives down sou-west WA. He has some abalone diver mates who can free dive and hold their breath for a few minutes at a time. Unfortunately a few years back whilst spear fishing one of them blacked out at 26 metres and never surfaced.
Now my bro has a couple of kids so that incident plus the increasing presence of big men in grey suits he sticks to fishing.

Here's a vid me and Trev done a year or so ago with a bit of breath holding, biggest tip i can give is before you go out and start doing this is to learn about shollow water black out!!!

Very true, big safety concern,I've had mate blackout and die and was lucky someone was there, they grabbed him and revived him and he spent a few days in hospital with all sorts of moniters attached

Just watched this OMG that is insane. Must be an amazing feeling flying threw the water knowing every inch you travel you need 2 inches of air to get back.

Just practice static, laying on your back on your bed. You can't kill yourself that way! Three deep (but slooooow) breaths, then one big one in and hold it. See how long you go, notice the different sensations you feel. Give your body at least 3 x the breath hold time before you do the next one. You'll progress quickly. Doing say 3 x breath holds maybe three nights a week I got to a 4 min static in a month or two.?

But as the other guys said NEVER do this in the water alone or without some proper training. **** it up, you die. :-/

Well worth learning for the surf though. To be in the middle of a lengthy hold down and be able to slip back into the freediving frame of mind, calm, and just wait it out knowing you'll be just fine is a huge bonus.
