I had a Breezer remind me that I had said I would make a video about some techniques I use to get out in bigger surf, so here it is!
disclaimer:
This was one of my first videos in my "Q-Tips" series on SUP instruction.
Because I'm a million years old, and why the heck should anyone take advice from a 75 year old, I added lead in clips.
Sorry it's too long and I won't be using that lead in again
This video is only about dealing with breaking waves... not all the other stuff that you need to know about getting out in bigger waves, That will be many videos.
ok... on to the video!
Very cool edit and excellent tutorial. All in on the kick through/over. At beach breaks it can be the difference to getting outside or getting dragged back to the starting point. If I am in the pack with surfers behind me and a set wave breaks outside of us this becomes a good board control tool.
Your vid has me stoked the step it up and do this more often. So the cheeky shark dropping in under you, Fla local?
Thanks for video. I do this and only issue I've had is my feet can end up high in the water column after falling backward and I've gotten clipped by the fin a couple times, luckily on bottom of boot. cheers
This helped me a lot thanks! I think you posted something similar previously if I remember. I have trouble getting all the way to kickpad but usually can get board over, need to take another step or two you definitely have this wired. I also will throw my board over the whitewater at an angle away from me when I'm down in the water by giving a hard shove against the tail and pushing tail down a little to raise the nose right before. A smaller board helps for this, also be prepared for board to come back at your face if you mess it up. This can be a good technique if your stuck between the impact zone and a no go reef.
