A question on transporting SUP. A 10 foot SUP is just too long to fit fully in vehicle (don't want to use racks) but will fit with board slightly sticking out of tailgate window.
My CRV has a tailgate window that opens. Is it legal / illegal to drive with this window open ?
I understand that consideration needs to be given to CO emissions but if you open all windows and put AC on refresh mode it is not an issue for short distances.
But is it legal in Australia ?
Seems that you can overhang till 1.2m without a signalling device (red cloth), and up to 3.7m with one

Always having some red cloth with a velcro/hook that you can quickly put on the leash plug seems a good idea.
Note that you may destroy the hinges and spring system of your rear window by driving with it freely open. try to devise something to have it rest in a fixed position so that bumps in the road do not make it move.

I actually piloted yesterday driving with a board hanging out but also scouring the window so it didn't flap about. Seemed to work well.
So it seems legal in QLD. Will need to find out if legal in NSW
We just installed these in our longer covers and also give extras away free with all boards sold over 8'0. Police are cracking down with the whole "secure your load" campaign. Better to be safer than sorry.

It's not illegal to drive with the tail gate open.
The biggest issue is that carbon monoxide from the exhaust will be sucked into the car. In case you didn't know it can kill ya.
If you are going to do it I suggest you leave a couple of other windows wide open to create enough turbulence to disperse the CO.
It has no odour so you won't know if it is sneaker up on ya.

I am aware of the CO. Even the Honda manual notes this. It advised that you should be all windows down , the AC on refresh mode (bring air from outside) , and to have it on full.
In terms of the CO issue I wonder if it is better to leave the hatch more open or less ? I would assume less
If there is movement in the window you will eventually stuff the gas struts. I speak from experience. Secure the window down.

You can pick up flags just like that one at Whitworths – i've got an Ace GT which hangs over the back of the within the legal requirements but because it tapers so much and is a white fade to the tip it's very hard to judge where it ends in relation to the car when directly behind it. I bought the flag for peace of mind more than anything else...
You can buy the orange flags from bunnings for $1. They used to give them away if you had a long load, now they charge 
I was under the impression (in NSW) that anything overhanging the front or rear of your car by any amount was supposed to be flagged. So anything past the towbar.
