A SUP Board went missing at St. Kilda West Beach
Its a blue G-Board and a Naish paddle
It went missing during the day at the 18th of Jan

not that this helps now but maybe for others , the link below has a story about starboards new 2009 range using surfboard tracker , now i know the technology isn't foolproof but it helps in this crazy world

It may be to late now but check out SBT, www.surfboard-tracker.com GET THIS PUT IN YOUR NEXT BOARD IF SOMEONE STEALS THEY CANT SELL IT AND YOU CLAIM FOR A REPLACEMENT......
It was one of the 1st modles with no handle, these boards are not available to the public so it will be easy to spot.
Was on St Kilda West beach most of the day with lots of people using it, then at the end of the day, Gone with a Naish paddle.

Easy to make , some Ali angle,lock & cable to car or something solid.
Save losing ya board.

Great idea and easy to make.. Shame about having to remove the fin but worth it if parking in a dodgie area.
I reckon you could make two about 1/2" long and not have to remove the fin..

Since the first post i started to get concerned about leaving my $1500 investment of joy sitting on the top of my car so i have investigated a fin box lock from this site

it seems to look a lot like the homemade one fester posted .
I ended up emailing the owner of Boardsecure Josh and asked if he would post to Australia ,
he said no problems and quoted me 12.50 us for post to Sydney . that was for the fin lock and cable , so i said sure and then emailed a paypal invoice with a total ... all to easy paid with my credit card and bingo !
i really liked the homemade one but without the necessary metal work ability i found this to be almost exactly the same they also have one that works on the leash plug ... anyway i hope this helps anyone who might be thinking security ....ahhhhhh peace of mind now .

They're easier to put on than normal tie downs and they're indestructible. The steel cable inside makes them very rigid once tightened and you can lock the loose end under the strap to avoid having a flappy bit. I have the short ones that are just long enough to go round the board with not too much slack so I don't have too much excess to tie off.
Most thieving is opportunistic. They just steal stuff because it is easy to do. A couple of big steel cables is plenty to put off the most determined thief.
I'll have to second Gorgo's comments on the SPT's. I've been using the greens (2.5m) for about 8-9 months and find they are really easy to use. The cable is well protected inside a nice cover, so no worries about scratching up your beach wagon. I found the 2.5's were a little tight for two wide SUB's, so bought the yellows (4m) as well. There is heaps to tie off when using two boards and the yellows......However, it works well with 2 SUB's and a couple of Mal's on the roof.......
If you do get these, make sure to push the clasp down every time you cinch the strap down. They can loosen up a bit if you dont (but never enough for the board to move much!).
BUT the good thing about the boardsecure version is that you can lock them up anywhere not just on your roof racks .
from what i understand the way that those other lock straps work is that the straps need to be positioned on the narrowest parts of the board IE the nose and tail ends , that way the potential scumbag theif cant slide the board off .the only problem with that is i have a 11.6 board when placed on my car roof i overhang on both ends , so the is no security , they can just slide the board out ! try it. yes im sure it works much better with a board bag and thats another pain in the arse in itself .

Messup, being able to lock your boards up anywhere is a certain advantage of the boardsecure version for sure.
I have a 12'6, 11'4 SUB's and various malibus between 9-10'. The SPT's have been used with all of them. I can assure you that when they are tightened up that the boards cant be slipped between them.
The SPT's are just replacing something that you are already using if you drive to the beach (tiedown straps) and the boardsecure is to be used in addition to the straps. The boardsecure kit certainly looks very robust and I am sure it will thwart any A$$holes attempts at getting your board off.
Good luck with it and let us know how they work out for your once you get them......Maybe I can use them to attach my boards to the underside of the deck when they are left out.......
It would be quicker and easier to take a hacksaw to the roof racks and cut the whole lot off the roof (or even steal the whole car) than to try and slide the board out once the straps are done up tight.
I have used the straps to lock the gate into where we were staying and to attach the board bag to the veranda. Sure you could cut through the board bag but you would have to be a pretty keen thief to bother. They'd probably get bored and go home for another bong.
Anything that will make it a hassle to steal the board will work. I used to use a plastic coated steel cable right around the board with a Kryptonite bike lock.

Dissappointed to hear of the theft!
Unfortunately theivery is rife in the area. Used to live just near there and anything that wasn't nailed down at home got pinched...tomato plants, bits of wood, smelly old clothes on the line - you name it! Lots of car break ins too. Any time of day or night.
Best use caution when parking off beaconsfield parade - anything is a target.
Let's hope the thief is dumb enough to be spotted.
