Seriously though that was absolutely heart stopping to watch. Possibly a life changing event for MF
As for Julian that was pure guts. Makes you wonder what you would do yourself in that situation.
A couple of years ago I was in Jbay for the comp and spent a lot of time with Mick talking about the abundance of the creatures of the deep along the African coast line. We opted for the worlds largest bungey over cage diving with sharks and also stayed on a "soon to be open" game park for a photo shoot. The whole time we were joking about some large African animal hunting us. Then last night things got pretty f#$ken real! This image sums up every surfers worst nightmare. #gomick
Scary scary stuff. Won't be surprised with this much attention to a very very lucky MF if next seasons boards will have some type of shark deterient contrasting colour to the under side. Wonder if naish's trible pattern bases were a shark safety response?
I reckon thats almost certainly a white from the colour, the shape of the dorsal fin and the shape of the caudal fin which as others have seen has been mistaken for a dorsal fin. Timburleigh has it nailed, though I cant quite see it being a 21-footer. But it had to be at least 12ft, maybe bigger. They simply don't miss if they have you in the crosshairs.
20 years ago a mate and I paddled out at jbay in the dark, thinking the sun was about to come up. That was possibly the scariest 20 minutes of my life, just waiting out the back, 4ft, cold, alone, water lapping in the darkness and wishing for dim grey light starting up. Too dark to paddle back in with the rocks like they are.
A good response to it on the ABC website from Surfrider Chair Brendan donoghoe...can't find it again though.
11/10 to mick.

Not sure if this should go here.. or on the 'Another crap idea' post..
I think we can all wear a T-shirt now that says " I SEE DUMB PEOPLE "

If it wasn't for the life guard they might have made the Darwin Awards. Unbelievable...
My impression was that the shark was loitering around, checking Mick out and might have been doing so for some time. Snagging on the legrope certainly brought it all to a head quickly. I tend to agree though, if the shark really wanted a piece of him the outcome would not have been good.
I've watched a big white pointer lurking off the back of my boat when fishing. Nudging the boat, open its mouth on floats, props, etc. (but not biting), scarpered when it got spooked, but had the disconcerting habit of coming up behind after I thought it had gone. Pretty placid though. I've never seen a psycho one, but I've seen little reef sharks go nuts - very quick, very agile, very aggressive. I think a big white pointer that was lit up like that would be very very scary thing indeed.

Can't argue.
- They made it back in safely...

it is me
I was wondering: if sharks panic when encountering a leash, maybe an anti-shark device could be some leash-like appendages floating around?

Hahaha they don't get to worried by kelp
just heard a swimmer was taken in J Bay today thats no good it sort of shows how lucky MF was
Can't find anything on that? A swimmer was taken in 2013 but there is no other mention of swimmer being taken today/yesterday?
well looks like a diver in Tassie was taken by a big white which according to reports had been cruising the area for a week
seems like this is happening a lot more the last few years.
its a worry
Could be an increase in shark numbers due to whale populations recovering , although great whites are not prolific breeders , i think it just may be a case of more and more people taking up aquatic activities.

im not so sure . yes more whales. more great whites- both protected.
pretty sure this shark wasn't checking the area for whales.
there were minor incidents or close sightings of this shark. chased a couple of other divers out too the day or so before
me, I reckon more gws around but less food around and they are tending to out source
its time for the government to get these personal devices up and running.
its the only way to please everyone
Finally a bit of press for Surfsafe..

Although it has todays date at the top it has 2013 further down?
Yes - it happened 2 years ago 2-300meters further down from where Mick Fanning was boxing last week...
