Hey guys & girls. I've been checking out sea breeze for a few months now and finally got the courage to post. I've been paddling flat water on a Naish Nalu with a crap paddle. Need to buy a good paddle and need some suggestions. I am prepared to pay up to $400. Any tips ?

This is good value... Cheap to post...

But yeah, otherwise, try Quickblade... There's a big range...

Quickblade or Kialoa. Found the oval shaft of the Kialoa very comfortable and probably
the lightest

Thanks guys.
Appreciate the recommendations.
I picked up my paddle 2nd hand and it's only 2 inches taller then me (I am 6'7"). It doesn't feel right. What's the optimum length over height measurement ?

Kialoa Hulu Ultra Light,

Kristi my daughter is a Kialoa Ambassador and got one of these before Christmas to put through its hoops and you definitely need to demo one.

I finished a 23km paddle yesterday and was totally stoked with the way it paddled.

Are you surfing or racing?

LOTS of different methods for blade length, a google search or forum search will find most of them. Height, flexibility, board thickness and surfing vs racing vs cruising will all have a bearing. Or one of your better shops will take a good look at you when you buy one.

Seriously, look at Ke Nalu, there is an extra long shaft available and a 7" adjustable extension handle allows you to play with length without taking to the hacksaw.

Whatever brand you go with I'd suggest try big blade (> 100 sq in), at your size you'll have the leverage to make a big one work. I've just traded up from 95 to 105 and I'm lovin' it.

G'day Brad, lots of people tell ya lots'a diferent stuff about paddle length.I was told about 6"-8" above ur head is the go when I first started but found as my ballance and overall tecnique improved it was way to long.I now have my paddles at about head hight this allows me to sink the blade up to the shaft without rasing my arms above shoulder hight which helps with ballance I recon.I only surf if I was racing like a lot of the guys here I would look at what they were using.I have 2 quickblade paddles same length with diferent size blades.Anyhow good luck and happy paddling.
P.S. At 6'7" you may have to get a custom shaft made if u want to go longer.

Brad, Ke Nalu have a paddle for every style of paddling and they have a demo program with local retailers. You can mix, shafts, blades and handles to suit your needs. Try their paddles and see what feels right. As for paddle height I'm down to 8 inches above the head for racing but you'd go longer for general cruising and shorter for surfing.

Brad,
I have a basic "guide calculation" relating to your overall paddling speed. Adds up to 100%.
Roughly; (give or take...)
75% is you - the "athlete"
20% is the board
5% is the paddle
Extra 1% for the fin... (-10% for no fin! )

Your Naish Nalu probably gets a 5/20 compared to other "race" boards.
All the $400 paddles get 4.5 to 5 out of 5. Alloy paddle... say 1 or 1.5 ...
Most of the race boards would cluster around 15-19...

Summary - all the $400 paddles are very good... and won't make different to your speed...

Hi Brad,
Welcome to sea breeze.
Initially, when I saw your user name I thought it's a gee up. I recall back in mid 90's I was working in security at Darling Harbour and I worked with a Michael Jackson, Glen Campbell (think country music) and a Matt Johnson (think Big Wednesday) so I guess it's possible there are numerous Brad Pitts around the world.
Cheers Scotty

Hi dtm. Bedtime with Ang is a mixture of pleasure and pain. We lock the 7 kids in the spare bedroom when we have our private time. Problem is I always forget which one of our 15 bedrooms I have left them in.
