Oliver and I were surfing at our new secret spot that we've named 'Bunker Bay' today and we'd had at least two hours of knee to waist high waves to ourselves.
We were paddling on our way back to the cars when Oliver said that he saw a fin.. I got my camera out hoping to catch a pic of it and didn't expect what happened next.
An 8' shark went under Olivers board and it went bump as he hit it with his fin.. The water exploded and Oliver almost fell in (btw Oliver's board has no grip or wax and he relies on his booties for grip) and when he dropped to his knees one leg slipped over the side on his board and the shark turned towards him and with its mouth wide open went to bite him on the calf.. Oliver kicked at the sharks head.. and slipped off his board and fell right on top of it.
Oliver landed on top of the shark and grabbed it in a big bear hug from above to try and stop its mouth biting him.. Lucky it was only waist deep and Oliver was able to stand while the Shark thrashed about and water was spraying everywhere and I yelled don't let go of him Oliver.
Oliver was able to walk backwards into the shallows knowing that if he let go it while in the water it might have another go at him.. Once on the beach it was too heavy to carry and Oliver dragged it backwards up the beach.
When Oliver let go it tried to get back into the water but Oliver grabbed its tail and dragged it all the way out of the water.
I poked it head with my Methane and to tried to bite it.. Those teeth looked razor sharp.
Once the shark stopped moving Oliver dragged it onto his Stonker board and it was almost as long as his 10'6" board.
We were going to leave it on the beach but Oliver decided to drag it back into the water.
We paddled back to the car watching for any more in the clear glassy water.

Holy **** Oliver!!!! That Just might be your 10 minutes of fame!!! How the hell didnt you become sharky dinner???
DJ , the best photos man !!!!
This actually relates to "Boardies Over Wettie", as the boardies double as the Quick Draw Camera Holster, so we can all enjoy !!
Looks like a reef shark (?). Anyone have more info ???
Would it have been OK eating ? Flake Steaks ?? !!
DJ....If that shark was live......or had sharp teeth.... you wouldn't be stickin your lovely Kialoa in its gob...you might scratch it
well, that sharks given every breezer a lesson on how to deal with one of oliver's biting remarks. just play dead, even if he kicks you around a bit, he'll get bored and move onto something else
cheers
ps now i'm just getting ready to play dead
The poor thing may have thought, "oh, here's my dad maybe, I'll go and take a closer look !!".
And WHAMMO, maybe it's not Dad !!
I'm thinking a fisherman might have caught it (and killed it) and couldn't pull it into his boat (too heavy) .. so just let it go and it drifted in.
DJ
good prank DJ ,if the shark hand any life in it the paddle would be dead not the shark ,never grab a live shark by its tail they will spin back and snap at you .the sharks gills give it away on the beach they have no life in them .
you dont see the damage the hook dose when gut hooked ,infections that can kill very slowly
I was onto you guys as I was reading but didn't know if you'd fess up!
Looks like the same breed they reported on that a guy caught in the bay from his
kayak over summer. Some type of Thresher maybe.
Surfed Big Left this morning and saw heaps of sea life. some identifiable as seals
and others not confirmed. Lots of splashes going on everywhere and things you
would catch out of the corner of your eye which are the worst! Got some fun waves
though.
DJ, that spot might be a little better next Saturday. Forecast looking good at this
stage!
Been heaps of Lurkers down this way lately chasing the Tuna run, Big White Guys and Mad Makos, I surf most of the time on my own which can feel sketchy at times
Here,s a couple of pics of a little Mako caught right near where i was surfing sunday arvo.
Poor bugger had cateracts or parasites on the eyeball.
Must make slow seal like objects seem like an easier option
Always surf with a friend, it cuts the odds 50%
It was an exciting story last night while it lasted. But today, I'm glad it was a fake, as I'm about to go for a paddle.... and you would be wondering.... do SUP's attract the curiosity of sharks !! ??
Oliver should get onr of these makes me feel much more secure on thoese long paddles over deep dark water..a personal Shark deterrent keeps Sharks 2meters away!!
From what I understand though, sharks are curious creatures. The electric field that these omit actually can attract the shark closer to you just to see what it is before realising they don't particularly like the frequency.
It's a small comfort that they deter sharks but in my opinion sharks being attracted to come 2m away from me before they don't want to eat me is a little too close. What if they swim from a k away to check it out and decide when they arrive I look like I'd probably taste OK???
I think i'd rather just slip past unnoticed.
