Perfectly good idea if you have a one armed person who wants to go paddling.

Here's one from 2008

The one above is very basic

even if it were scaled up it wouldn't work for SUP very well.

OK David John .. you have canned this idea .. just how would you accommodate a one arm SUPer .. ??

EITHER PUT UP OR PUBLICALLY WITHDRAW .. let's all see your solution.

My one armed mate is sitting next to me
and he can't wait to see your reply.

I was actually contacted by a guy who lost and arm as a result of an accident and has developed his own device, that can be used with a normal paddle and without too much alternation.Problem is, his bionic arm doesn't have a strength tolerance and he was breaking paddles pretty regularly.

It's definitely a project that could be well received.

Just watched the vid again.. I apologize if you think I'm making fun of this idea.. I first watched this vid on my phone and with low sound I missed those few words about the device that attaches to the top of the paddle to the shoulder.. and missing those key words the whole vid made no sense to me.. I've seen sooooo many very bad paddle technique vids over the years and thought this was another.

It's actually a very good idea.. so again I say sorry.. I'm all for coming up with ways to help amputee's do things that we all can do.

As far as another way to stand up paddle with one arm.. The Burmese have been doing it for years..

My grandfather had one arm. He lost his right arm (and yes, he was right handed) when he was just 17. He was waiting for a bus and a car came off the road and crushed him against the bus stop. He used to tell us he lost it to a tiger/ lion etc etc. Many varying versions.
The strength he developed in his left arm was phenomenal. He could crush a macadamia nut with his left hand. I never got in the way of that left arm.
He taught himself how to write again, dress himself, and tie his shoe laces. He held a driving licence until he passed away.
He raised 7 children, taught his grandkids how to swim, surf and fish.
I'm sure as hell that if there was a one armed SUP paddling option available at the surf club he was a member at, he would have had a red hot go at it.
Anything that shares the stoke is surely worth giving it the time of day.

The one armer's paddle.

Here it is .. work in progress ..

but it works OK as it is ..

.. and it twists to the right

.. and it twists to the left

.. and the handle gives more stroke power and manoeuvrability.

Bethany Hamilton is a one armed pro surfer. Could she use one of these if she had to paddle surf ?

Hello Gboots

Thanks for posting

it would only assist the likes of Bethany if she were to
kneel or standup paddle .. but she's doing very well as is.
