Another fantastic vid Matt and "Stimo cam", if those on water shots don't entice so crew from over East next year nothing will!
Big thanks to all the girls and guys from SUPWA that make this happen.
Hope your back on the water soon Ben, need to keep the rivalry going!!
Awesome event supwa the wind gods were good to us top effort volunteers only down side the shorter break claimed my f 16 maybe godstellin me to get in the 14 ft program mite have to chop an crop the 16 at the 14 mark put a foam ace nose on her be a very slippery 14 me thinks mite not sink again with that foam in the nose bit of rebrand radstarsurf yew yew
Fully flexed nose hollow boards arnt up to it me thinks
Mate that's a chain saw job trust me not worth the stress of the re build Looks like the pump shop sponsored that board any way time to re invest through the business my new board is going sick thanks Enviroplumb
Mid week I'm still thinking about that run......
.....it's like my Happy Gilmore - Happy Place - ........cruising onto bumps and surfing down connecting up runs, coming on shore and having someone carry my board and hand me a cold drink. Later I'm sitting in an easy chair getting handed a Guinness - the only thing missing is that one handed guy playing a white piano, I think I'd prefer Thom Yorke though.......
.....then I come back to reality and play better golf.

It's been a few days since race day, but I still get flashbacks from the race that bring a smile to my dial. Like Stimo and I trading runners for the last 15 k's, sometimes with less than a board length between us as we're charging downhill at 20+ k's. The super competitive yet friendly quest for the elusive runner-up in the O/50 div ( sorry Kev, superhumans don't count !!) with Gordo, Kent, Rick, Ian, Derek and myself. never more than a few hundred metres in it, even after 21 k's. The awesome welcome at the finish (thanks girls and guys !!), and the fantastic vibe provided by everyone involved. Especially to Beau and Terrene for making the effort to get to the event, and being so down to earth, and generally just being top people to have a chat to.
Best SUP event yet - fantastic effort SUPWA, the sponsors, and all involved.
And a question - Marcus and Ben finished the race in a time that was approx. 15 minutes faster than their times from last years' KOTC, in conditions that were fairly similar. I know a lot of other competitors finished 10-15 minutes faster than their times from last year too. Technique ? board design ? more experience ?
And what could we expect next year ( time wise) if we have similar conditions again??
Someone did mention that Beau's time was the quickest anywhere in the world for that distance (21km), can anyone confirm or deny it?
Beaus time is really, really fast - but it doesn't beat this: Maui - Molokai 2012: Connor Baxter was first over the line in a time 2 hours and 55 minutes. With the course being roughly 26.5 miles long (42.6kms) that means the Maui wunderkind paddled at an average speed of 9.1 mph (14.6 kms/h) for almost three straight hours.
Beaus time is about 13.8km/h which is solid. As some have noted everyone improved times - the conditions of the day have a lot to do with how fast it will be.
Our weekly 10.1km race record in Cape town is 42.57 which is 14.1km/h but if there is less wind the guys can't even get under 50minutes. But conditions for downwinds are so diverse it doesn't really pay to compare.

Hi Peter
The King of the Cut course is actually 21.7km long, with Beau's time at 1:31:23hrs this is 14.3km/h average. Connor's time was incredible for that distance on an unlimited board (17'?) and Beau was on his 14'. Not sure how that compares around the world, but it seems fast and the race track is very fast and reliable. (we also had Ben and Marcus only 2 minutes behind.)
I have seen footage of the Cape Town run you guys do, it looks amazing and I love the way Chris Bertish paddles - he makes it look so easy. It would be great to have you guys come over for this next year - maybe Naish could get a team over? Just a short hop across the Indian Ocean!
shout out to all of SUPWA and Surfing WA !
One of the funnest and most enjoyable events
That 21.7km run was pure fun and congrates to the winners, i envy the participants that did times 1:30 to 1:45 epic efforts, that is actually pretty loose to be travelling at that speed.
cant wait till the next event
Matt great Video also, if your not hooked after your vision of the event .....

Hi Everyone,
I was one of the Board Valets at the KotC, totally inspired to get training for next year's downwinders - I've done 2 downwinders and addicted already. Awesome stuff.
I'm also helping run TOMORROW's local river SUPWA Paddleloop, and this is where all the next generation of SUP downwind racers will be coming from. It is a grass roots SUP racing event.
We currently have 23 participants for the 8th 4.2km paddle of 2013. Being that it is the last one for 2013, Ian and I would like to have over 30 participants, so if your name isn't on the list then please come along and support us (SUPWA, the paddleloop and the next SUP'ing generation). www.racesplitter.com/races/CD1930F00
It's free to enter, and all you have to do is nominate your estimate finish time, and your board type.
email: ianlane@iinet.net.au or check the events page: www.facebook.com/events/595584500477391/
It is an interval start, so the developing paddlers set off first at 10 sec intervals, always makes for a great finish.
See you tomorrow!
Cheers,
Jade

Correction - kotc course is 21.2km. Beau's ave speed was 13.9 km/h. Beau didn't have a GPS so we averaged the straight line distance. Everyone that wore a GPS had a range of distances depending on their line - hence 21.7. Beau had a straight course.
So can we confirm fasted DW wind track in the world for 14 foot div 21.3 k average distance from most GPS watch wearers mine was 21.7 k

Guys it's was 21.17 k On race day and on Tuesday 21.47. Lach had a 21.17 on race as well if I can work out how to up load the garmi I will
Mine showed 21.07km and I didn't turn it off till I was in the car park so I would put it at pretty close to spot on 21k's.

Good article on SUPracer on Downwinder speeds and times. Might appear to be a bit brash of me stating it is the fastest downwind track in the world, but there is a lot of potential for the course considering there are no flatwater sections - following ocean from start to finish. In regard to present 'known' locations, it would be one of the fastest downwind tracks in the world. Some of the guys feel they could go under 1:20hr for the course, which would be 15.9km/h. Interesting to see what happens over this summer.

Note - the King of the Cut is an open board race - 14' or Unlimited can walk away with the title.
Hi Goochi - if Beau had a GPS that can spit out a GPX-file then we can check his 1km/10km splits and see what they were like. It sounds to me like you could have one of the fastest runs for sure - more wind more speed!

Beau doesn't wear onehe just paddles flat out If we get a 25 to 30 kn the Ben and Marcus will smash that time and not to mention Will he's from your country and from ski to SUP its just scary the pace he's getting out of a sup
if we do a run with 30 knots id think we will go quicker but i can't see myself ever doing 15.9kph.
Marcus, I'm not so sure, I'm an old geezer and look at my split times - yes - they are no where near 15.9km/h over the distance, but we're exceeding them in parts and just need to learn to maintain the averages. I don't ever see myself doing those speeds - but I'm on average 5th -10th fastest here, the kids are several minutes ahead of me and improving all the time.... Lighter boards, better conditioning and improved technique - downwinding is what, 6-8 years old (4 years on my part) and I think we'll see huge improvements. Connors Maui - Molokai averages are incredible and would probably have a 5km stretch where he is close to 15.9km/h.
