SURFFX SUPjAM #3 - Gold Coast - RESULTS:
SUPjAM - April 13 – Surf Paddleboarding –Gold Coast - Wrap up:
The morning greeted us with a High Tide and a 16 knot Southerly blowing, shades of defeat hindered the Supjam organisers, but the waves were much better than expected at a metre plus, out doing the day prior, when it was near flat surf. Overcast conditions did not hamper the enthusiasm of the competitors who rolled in at 7am and hit the surf. Music was pumping, waves were pumping and the Surf Paddleboarders all went out for the first of five expression sessions.
Tim Cyprien, U18 winner of previous SUPjAM’s had Trevor Tunnington hot on his heels, with a 2 point margin difference, went on to win his 3rd title. The 360 spins and performing ‘Duck dives’ crouching on the paddle out, had everyone a gasp to see such courage. Nic Walker and Matt Delahunty baited each other on ‘side left’, trying to match wave for wave, with some inspiring riding from the Juniors.
The girls hit the water, and added some glamor to the glistening water as the sun poked it’s head out from above the clouds. Kate Barker from Currumbin showed that she can handle the swell with some impressive riding on her JP board. Ke’ale Dorries brought more sunshine to the event, with her effortless riding style winning 1st prize, while Allison Fullagar, wobbled in late and got into gear, and caught some great waves, getting her 2nd place with Kate 3rd.
On the Men’s side, Jackson Close shows us why he is the King of Supjamming, with long rides from out the back to short trickery in the shore break. Andrew Cousins continues to bite at Jacksons paddle coming in at 2nd place with some solid wave riding and severe cut backs.
The MASTERS 35+ gave us a wide range of styles, but Marty Carter led the pack with never ending paddle outs and superb wave riding in. Anthony Smith, “Smithy” was hot on his heels with a 4 point gap to take 2nd and Adam Back at 3rd. These guys had their fan club here as cheers went up on presenting their awards and prizes. The over 45+ “Salty award” was won by Patrick Cyprien and the Grand Masters 50+ was awarded to Wayne Johnstone, showing you are never too old to battle mother nature with a short board and a paddle. Here is to the next SUPjAM in MID WINTER, we hope to see some nice, sunny, cool, smooth conditions for SUPjAM #4.
