I was recently lucky to escape the cold winter weather here in Melbourne and travel to Scott's Head (NSW) and my timing was perfect to check out the Newcastle SUP club's yearly SUP event..
I got some vid.
Fantastic video! What a beautiful location! Looked like a fun day too!
And that hoverboard looked fantastic! I ned to take a closer look...
Thanks.. I'm living at Dromana now so I'm not far from where you live.. You are welcome to come visit and check it out.. or look up FoilDrive.
Hey dj interested in how the powered foil goes in waves. I see a local guy in Torquay cruising around on one and seeems to be having a ball but doesn't really come in closer and catch swells like standard foils - is that because the drive mechanism slows it too much or is he just cruising? Either way looks like fun just wondering if they can surf like normal foils. Thx Dools
Hi Dools.. I'm no expert and probably due to my windsurfing background I found it hard to foil without hanging off the wing and using this FoilDrive setup I'm slowly getting used to balancing without the wing..
I'm using the FoilDrive folding propeller and there is very little drag once the power is shut off.. I have not really used my set up in waves yet but at Scott's Head we did have a day with enough swell to ride some waves that were really just only lumps..
I have found with my big foil I can back the power off to about 65% and stay on the foil on flat water.. Riding these lumps I was able to back the power off to about 10% and stay foiling.. When shutting the power off totally I would drop off the foil but I'm sure that's my poor foiling or pumping skills..
I'm guessing the guy you've seen at Torquay is still learning like me or just wants to play it safe to avoid crashing or just keep out of the way of surfers.. or he is just cruising..
I'm hoping to use it to learn to surf waves and also for downwind surfing.. I've been able to run the cable inside my mast and this reduced the drag noticeably.. FoilDrive now offer this to buy and I think it well worth doing but you do need to choose an efoil position (like mine) or a foil assist position on the mast..
