What a fantastic weekend !
Friends, a relaxed atmosphere, highly organised, in a beautiful location and with family there as support crew.
Tam and I made a lunch call on Saturday to make a 'short holiday' of the event in Ulladulla and as such, we headed down with Miss T after lunch Saturday rather than a 6am start Sunday.
After checking into our Mollymook accommodation, we watched the sunset on the 'racetrack' in Burrill Lake with the boys (and girls) and had an early night in preparation for Sunday's festivities.
Full credit to all who put on this event, so well organised, a fine turn out all round with food stands, kids play equipment, music and plenty of sales opportunities with stalls from all sorts of outdoor activities.
Global Surf Industries had their full range of SUP's on hand and I got to paddle the 10' McTavish, 9'10 Walden (which I really liked) and the new NSP 12' and 14' boards as well as a full range of paddles which was great to see and compare.
This video is a summary of events from sunset Saturday thru to Jappy's (SCCUPC / Eastcoast SUP) inspired run in the 4 lap 11.2km 'long course'.
Great job with the vid Chris.. There's some beautiful pictures there and looks like it was a great race..
Are you bringing the family to Merimbula this year?
DJ
Great wee vid Chris .....
This was the first time this event was held , and I've got a take my hat off to everyone who orangised a great event.
I'm pretty sure next year will be a 2 day event ,and I think there going to have another one later on this year.
It's a great atmosphere and looking forward to heading down that way for the next event .
Boylos
Thanks guys.
For sure DJ, after missing out due to my wife's work commitments last year, we already have leave from work booked and will be there in November - can't wait. It'll be great to catch up with you again - been to long.
Same on the weekend Craig, nice catch up. Look forward to our next.
should've gone. At least the pics and video give me an idea of what I missed. I did some club work yesterday and went to the SPSC day at Long Reef. A very high level of surfing in choppy onshore conditions. thanks nice pics and atmosphere. Go Cronulla Sutherland Stand Up Paddle Club crew
Hey Chris,
Thanks for the great summary of the day. It really was a great fun event. Super efficient running and loads of great people all with the right spirit! The course was lots of fun with 7 buoys to get around on each lap and great flatwater paddling conditions!
Line honours went as follows: Mark?, Paul Dreghorn, Mel McManus, Craig Boylos, Steve Hamann. I can only tell you the times for me, Boylos & Steve: After a totally hectic neck and neck sprint from the last buoy, I couldn't believe that I did actually pip Craig right on the finish to be third across the line in a time of 40.30. The nose of Craig's booard was only about 15cm behind mine. Paddling beside this 6'3" power house of a bloke made me paddle harder than I have ever paddled in my life! Thanks for making me push so hard Craig! Then Steve Hamann from Huskisson (one of our SUP surfin' partners in crime at Husky Spit) was 5th in 43 minutes (not bad given his first ever paddle on a race board was half an hour before the race!).
I would recommend this event to anyone interested in flatwater paddling.
Already looking forward to next year. I should have a few photos to add later.
Mel
Oops, sorry Mel, not that I saw as I was still on lap 1 but I was told that Craig pipped you....but looking at the photo of him staring at you after the sprint past the finish, I guess that body language says a lot !
YEH .... my body lauguage was amazed and totally stuffed ,and full of praise for Mel .... I 've never really had a battle like that before to the finish line especially on flat water ..... if only a freak ripple had come my way I might of just got her!
Boylos
