Not much good wind for downwinders lately, so been taking the 14'er out for a few outings in the surf. Sad fail at the end if you last that long.
Unreal vid Foamballer!
I pissed meself laughing when you attempted that barrel!
Are you using the std fin?
It looks to turn a bit easier than mine?
Cheers,
Ken.
Thanks Ken, yeah standard 9.5 fin set two thirds back in the fin box. I was thinking that yours being lighter would be slightly easier to turn? I'm putting a lot of weight on the back to shift it.
ShireSUP - I dunno if this board is much better overall than anything else of this size to tell you the truth but it's a lot of fun to mix it up a bit.
Very cool vid and I'm a big fan on surfing the race boards.
I think when you start surfing as a kid one of the first buzzes you get is those first trims across an open face and I still get the same thing now when you get a nice one where the timing is just right.
On your next installment I'll be looking forward to some soul arching, cross stepping and perhaps a sneaky coffin ride just to finish it off!!
Well done
Herb
I hear ya Herb... I'd really like to get the hang of cross-stepping as it's such an efficient way to move. I can do it forward if I make a conscious effort to do it, but it's not automatic. Stepping backward I'm finding a real challenge for some reason. Soul arching: nah - I'd do my back in. Coffin ride: Request noted.
Great vid.
Nothin better than surfing a glide on those smaller glassy bumps - it's so fast. I got to remember to change the fin on mine next time so I can turn the beast a little better.
This is my standard fin:
I've tried this fin from my 11'4 Nalu on both the 2013 and 2014 Glide 14'.
Only for a couple of sessions on the 2013 and once on the 2014. Fin position may have been slightly forward of where I usually have the standard fin so not a definitive result but these were my impressions:
- tracking seemed about the same, but I was out in the surf, so hard to tell.
- the tail was a bit 'squirrelly' in waves. Felt looser and a bit shifty. Less positive
- however no real change in term of turning the board once at speed.
Unfortunately, I haven't tried this fin out on any sucky waves, but I suspect that it wouldn't 'hang in there' as well as the standard glide fin on a steep wall. One thing about the new Glide is that it doesn't like being down on the flat on a sucky wave. The trick to survival is to stay high in the wave, and the std fin lets you do that. I'd be less confident if I had the Nalu fin in.
I'd really like to know if anyone else has tried different fins and found a positive difference.
You're a better man than me FB buggered if I can surf my new Glide like that .
I am Ok with swells and little waves on it but no good with what you were on. Well done I say.
I will stick to paddle inch the big boards and surfing smaller boards.
ER
Awwww shucks ET... thanks. The truth is that it's much easier to surf the big boards on the slightly larger waves as the speed lets you get up the back of the board more and get some of those sticky rails out of the water. I'm woeful in really small waves.
That looked like heaps of fun, you make the turns look easy. I take it with a 14 you gotta move back right over the fin?
