Ok, got a set of Harley Ingelby fins in the Skate ready to go for tomorrow. Just hope the surf doesn't drop out completely over night.

I'm using the Jackson Close model fins from Shapers.

I had a couple of them warp, the guys at Shapers were all too happy to replace the whole set on the spot. In an age where so many shops and manufacturers (both in and out of the surf industry) try to deny responsibility and avoid warranty I am very happy with the service from these guys.

What board are you using them in and how do you like them? The reason I ask is, even though I generally like big fins, I don't seem to be be able to gel with the big side fin / smaller centre fin setup. For this reason I haven't tried the Jackson Close fins but lots of people seem to like them.

Useless because too far up and between rear quad fins , take it off, you don't need knubster on this board settled with quad fins

I second Kami, your board has the rear quads so far back that you dont need a knuster... I guess you may even want to reduce the rear quads in size!

Normally the rear quads are a tad forward of where would be a thruster central fin, to compensate for the added fin area and avoid too much stiffness.

You right Colas on every point you said.

But i was talking about Jaap's board. And my idea i expose here is : one fin, whatever it is , need a planning area around it to bring effect (gliding board).
So, once that said, the Jaap's center fin won't have flow of water so this "center tad" will have no effect because rear quad fins take the flow and lift up the tail getting the center tad out of water flow.
Useless i reckon and more: make drag

Have look on my board,( welcome to my place , too) took several sessions trying all my fins ( i got nearly all FCSfins) in clean waves2,4foot clean, perfect waves to find the best fin combo. With this combo H3H2 this board become unbelievable , i'm stocked of this board/fins

That's not a bad board I like how you can vary your trailers -I guess with the other two boxes.

I appreciate all this fin knowledge, severely lacking there. I only feel it, can't explain it.

Question, a board tracking, or the stiffness from a rear foot not back enough - do they feel the same?

These are the fin sets I made for Sups which can be swapped around into different combo's on different boards. Re the nubster style set ups , I am now running 5 same sized fins in my Slate and it works a treat (this shot shows the V8's in front) but I don't recommend it in the Starby 8-10 widepoint above those box placements are super different ????

Piros thats an awesome video.. and great idea ..thanks. A couple of questions..what differnce does it make to the minion sup when the nubster is changed for one of your 6's and secondly what difference does it make with out the nubster in at all and just the 4 fins. I've only tried mine with the 5 fin step up with the fins from Deep.

Cheers Byron

Hey Byron,

Simon has his Deeps pretty dialled in , so it's a try and see thing. What I'm finding if you feel you need a nubster a small fin will also work. If you don't get your back foot onto the tail on these style boards you put heaps of pressure on the fins. It's pretty easy to turn these boards mid board but hard to rail turn if your foot is not back and that makes them slide. I don't see a problem in slightly over finning these boards because of the speed they produce.

A small rear fin or nubster will fit in your boardies pocket so just go out and try and see how you go , pretty simple to switch over a tabbed fin in the water.

SurfinJ, hard to reply to your question about tracking. Yes! same feeling as getting back foot too forward: can be back foot to forward because of " rotten "rocker or a stiffen surfer as well. In that physical case, the solution is to do some stretching first before hang up the surfshop dealer

Depending on fin plug's placement , distance from tail and rail - toe - cant or depending on tail plan shape, combo's fin can be a reply to fin adjustment. Getting many fins, switch them will allow you to adjust to the wave situation and bring your board to the best of it.
Be care , board designed as single fin or 2+1 won't be a thruster because lift tail of the single fin board won't really thrust . As well a Vangard type board as Minion won't do a single finned board .

As a shaping amateur for 45 years now i do think this : a board has to be shape around fins placement , thinking in first to planning area and fins .From the 70' when i put side fins on single fin wingers, my " twin fin's asymmetric trailer'' period or my thruster 6' board of the 80' ; All that times I called my fins placement " magic triangle" . It's sides triangle made of fin and rail . I reckon to watch this triangle on board which fit you and keep this dimensions triangle in memory...
