I am heading to the Maldives in September. I am 6'2" and 90kg

I am considering which board to take. I have been loving my 9.0 X 30 X 127L Revolution as a one-board quiver. It can balance in any conditions including wind, chop, and current. It rips on my home beach break from waist to 1.5 OH waves. It can really carve a smooth bottom turn and is fast down the line.

I have been looking at the 8.8 flow and the 8.5 SP25. They seem to be more performance than the Revolution and would be good boards for steeper waves. If these are better choices for the Maldives it would nudge me to pick one up.

I am not familiar with the SUP waves in the Maldives.

I have just arrived back from a SUP/Foil trip with James Casey in the Maldives. We did not score great waves but fun waves and I rode the 9.0 X 90L Sunova Revolution a couple of times and was really impressed by how much better it surfed compared to the 8 3" 100L Sunvova Flash I was on most of the time. By far the best SUP surf-style board I have been on ( prob unless you to go a sinker which is problematic)

I would take a board you like surfing ,and familiar with and dialled into .I used the boats boards and felt I wasted a few good sessions ,as the boards and fins where wrong for me ,it would of been good to take a board I was use to ,I was hoping to go
to the maldives ,but i got a bad injury ,but I would have taken my 8'8 flow ,what stands out
about it is the speed and speed generated out of the turns and the thinned rail really cut into the wave faces
also it turns fantastic .as you said you know the waves there ,so a fast board would be my option
wish I was going again ,enjoy mate .

Thank you for the comments. I did go out with 3 boards for comparison and will take the Revo. I know it well.

Cheers!

For what it is worth, on my trip last year I took my 8'8 Flow V2 and I thought it was great. I am 6'3 and I think I was 95 kg at the time (101 kg now ). If you are going with Moon Tours (recommended) you will see a guy on a red Flow in their gallery - that's me - so the only limitation of the board was the rider.

But as Tardy says, if you feel confident on the Revolution it is probably best to stick with it (unless you will have enough time to become confident on the Flow). When the waves stand up, and you are looking down into blue water covering sharp coral, you don't want to be second-guessing how to ride the board.

I am super looking forward to the tip with Moon Tours.

A different question. I am 6.2 and 95kg. The 9x30x127 rips for me, the drops and turns are super fun and it seems to perform better the steeper the waves become. Super stable, I can stand in any current, chop, and wind. For anyone who rides the Revolution, how do you think the 9x30x127 and the 9x28x115 would compare in performance and stability? The 30 wide is so stable I am thinking the extra performance on the 28 would be worth adding to my quiver. Thoughts?

I am not a revolution rider, but it looks like a pretty big drop to me. Two inches less in width and 12 litres less in volume are significant. I am your size and have been supping for a while (but am 61 yo) and I think I would struggle on that board - struggle to stay verticle let alone turn and paddle for waves with confidence. I have shorter boards but the width is so important.

Having said that, the revolution seems to carry the width through a lot of its length with a pretty full nose, so a 28" revolution would be a lot more stable than a 28" Flow, for example.

After talking to a few people, adding another Revolution to my quiver did not seem like a great option. Creek and Tiago spoke highly of the SP25. The comments I liked best was that is surfed life a surfboard and was very stable for its size. The biggest issue was the 8'5"x 30 7/16" x 126, was too wide and a few too many liters, the next size down is 8'2" x 29 1/2" x 115 would be a work-out when choppy. I have an Infinity RNB 8'2"x 30"x125, it is super stable, but wish it was a bit narrower had a few less liters. I know this is a different board, but I have been SUPing a few years (I am also 61 yo) and bought way too many boards, I think I have a good feel.

I called Dylan at Sunova. Problem solved. They don't list it on the website, but they make an SP25 8'3"x 29 13/16"x119. I pulled the trigger.

I should also mention that I am going to Thailand to pick-up the board in 8 weeks. I did not want to wait for my Revo last year and was looking for an excuse to go to Thailand so I went to the factory and got it. There is fun surf there and checking out the factory and meeting everyone was super fun. The price is less paying in Thai Baht and almost pays for the ticket to fly there.

Thanks to all for board talk!
