Hey guys anyone out there made there own downwinder im thinking a 14 footer my i have made some surfboards in the past with some much needed help from others. So i think why not give it a crack im thinking of using the AKU shaper designer? Dont have any idea where to start with rocker numbers or tail or nose wide points?
Would maybe think 14 x 28?
Have tryed a 14ft glide and went good but thought i would do a homemade project ?

I know nothing about AKU but Isn't 12'6 a "standard" and longer than that is unlimited ? If the blank is going to be machine shaped there will be a limit to how far the cutting head (or table ?)can move and you may want to avoid having to join foam pieces together. Given the large volume of a race board it is most likely you will want to use a very low density EPS or it will be very heavy. I would suggest minimal rocker that you can get away with to maximise the waterline length.

If you make it out of eps without a stringer, make sure you brace it while you glass it, cause over that length with the weight of the glass it will go out of shape

and keep the rails hard for atleast the last third of the length

pull the tail in a bit, downwind boards are like women, big square arse ends just don't work

good luck finding a machine that'll do a 14fter, pm me if you do

the glide really is the best gp downwind board

so demo one and steal the mesurements

then post photos when you finish it

from that photo you can see the tail has been pulled in,

not really wanting to explain myself to someone who obviously has no idea, but for your sake...

pull the tail in from the widest point on the rail, the idea of getting more push from behind by keeping the ass end as wide as the wide point doesn't work.

Maybe that's not why we shape wide tails!

Sure a rounded pin will surf better, but not everyone worries about how their downwind board surfs. STAYING on a plane is way more important. Speed rules.

A wide tail lets you walk the board up and down controlling pitch with ease!

As opposed to having a board that drops off a plane instantly if you step just a few inches back because the tail SINKS.

There is no RIGHT answer to any feature. I develop shapes that work for me and my waves and wind.

Interesting comment given Latman actually owns a fair sized company that manufactures surf craft. You'd hope he has some idea given that he feeds his family and those of his staff knowing at least something about it.
