Just a lonely kook with my 9'2" Gill up here in Townsville.

Had to (ahemm.. well love it really) take up kite surfing just to be able to "surf".

On cyclone days, we get around 10 foot dumpers just north of here (Saunders Beach, etc) which is great but very few and far between. Very similar to surfing the great lakes in the US.

Magnetic Island gets some on the NW side, but it's a short ride.

Any other longdoggers up here other than SUPers?

Yeah mate. That would be sweet. I don't care about crocs, just like most don't care about sharks. Meh, part of the ocean deal really.
but to be honest I've never seen a croc whilst been out. I think the stingers are far more dangerous and stinger suits are a MUST most of the year. This time of the year it's sweet as, but no waves now. Wind's will be back though any day now.

On my travels with work, I have seen guys surfing logs North of Cairns on the way to Port Douglas.

There area couple of bays there that have a small point wave when there is. Wind swell.

Also have seen a couple of guys surfing south of the break wall at Mackay.

So there has to be the odd place around Townsville that gets a bit of a wave.

Goodluck lads.

I went to high school up there and joined Arcadia surf club on the Island for some ocean time... Bummer that when it actually had waves the ferry's at that time were cancelled.

I surfed a few times on the Strand in cyclones. Quite surreal, mid 90's not many people surfed aroudn there and I have an amazing memory of catching waves while all of the cars were honking horns and flashing lights. Crazy fun.

I lived at Black River, I'm blown away that you surf at Saunders.... Have seen so many croc slides in the creek around the old salt pans. Also used to launch out of Balgal to camp on Palm and Havana Islands, plenty of crocs up there also.

No questions it is the real QLD up there. Love it.

Hey Lofty Florence will be on this weekend, you probably no that, get over there have a surf take your kite and ride it home.
Below is a crap pic of the local at head high after a 20 - 25 kt southerly, winter highs will blow offshore till @930 and then pump to make it a kiters paradise in the arvo.
We used till ride our logs in these conditions until a black tip rammed 2 of us one morning. We then went to the dark side.
