It was a Macca modified Big Kahuna, sold with the board. Sadly not much chance of replicating it.

generally that kind of fin.

not a fin im into or had much success on any type of boards 666,s included.

but hey its a forum and a free world

So you like something with a bit wider base, less rake and on the stiff side? More drive and stability?

In concept, the following is pretty simple...

If you want a more traditional ride, think along the lines of a 8"+ centre fin, like a L-Flex or (B), or Greenough Fin... With or without small side biters....
A more modern ride, think 7.5" or smaller, with 4" side bites... Or 7" plus 4.5" side bites...

It'll be a single mate, with a fairly narrow pin so I reckon a 9" or 9-1/2" should fit the bill.

Agree, the height isn't that important.
Doesn't really reflect anything, I have numerous fins the same height and none are the same fin, different base, rake, tip and area.
IMO pointless comparing them on height.

If your talking 1/2 inch off the length the base shape also changes,I find 1/2 works a treat,it gives me a little less drive but loses the board up also.

Looking at fins to improve your surfing isnt the answer.
Like it or not and l guess the romantic types wont, surfing is a series of connected moves.

Unless you do that or have a understanding of whats required getting a u beaut fin wont do a lot if anything.

Generally people looking for the loosest fin or board possible have technique issues.

I mean look at jackson close and the like. They can make mal look like a shortboard because they have the basics down pat.

red thumb time I guess

Yeah I agree that fins don't make a surfer but at the same time they have a massive effect on your board and the way you surf.

To use your example, Jackson close isn't riding a big D fin he is basically riding a thruster setup.

He wants to surf like a short boarder hard off the bottom through the lip etc..

Sure he could ride a D fun but do you think he would surf as good? Or the same?

I don't think he could come off the bottom the same and or have the same turning radius?
I don't doubt he could still surf it but would he be as good as having his normal fun setup? I don't think so.

So IMO fins are very important but I agree they won't make a bad surfer a good surfer but they may make you enjoy the talent you have a bit more.

Enjoy the talent you have yes. But probably have more talent then one thinks.

Money invested in a big fin ranges means to me that money would be better spent working with a pro surf coach.

Better outcome in the long term

Personally I did this a few years ago because I wasnt consistent with my surfing. Nail it one day . Shocker next dayetc

Some may say im no better

But know why when I stuff it up

Too over the top. Is it. For all the talk I dont have many fins.

Good points , Agreed LL.

When I think about it I own a few fins but only 3 that I use on all my boards 99% of the time.

I surf one board with the same fin set up 95% of the time. The board felt like a dog before the fin change. Now happy as larry. Once you get a good setup = keeper in my world. And I define a keeper as a KEEPER

Agree with SP that huge diff between some fins types and also with Cobra that 1/2 inch on a longboard would make stuff all difference if all elements the same unless you are KS or JC or similar.

On a lighter note just had a really nice feed!

For some reason people seem to think that this type of fin is only for logs but I had it in a modern single fin and it worked a treat. As said before a good fin doesn't make a good rider

Rubbish. Thats totally wrong and dangerous to assume thats what happens- it doesnt You gradually build a lining on your blood flow system.
anyone over forty should really be have a hard look at what they are eating. Màte next door just had a heart attack at the alley

Very true. I'm lucky I have a really good GP. Anytime I see her she gets out my history and makes sure I do blood tests and all other necessary checks. She's Russian and is very blunt and tells it how it is. Nothing wrong touch wood
