Combis really were good surf wagons. That rear engine meant there was a fair bit of weight on the rear wheels and they were surprisingly good in soft stuff. 25 years ago we used to flog a mates Combi into Derrs. Anyone who remembers the dunes knows that was no mean feat. It was set up as a camper so once there we could make a day of it and were the cool kids having coffee and sangas in comfort and shade in between the waves.

That one looks well loved, Macaha. And, why I like to see all the old cars looking pristine again, I also like to see them looking like the get used for their intended purpose. I don't think anyone would drive a Combi in 2015 like my mates used to get driven. It was absolutely immaculate and got sold in 1996 for $6500.

Remeber the ders and the Spot well. Thats where i grew up as a gromet spoilt for surf. I was the youngest of the local crowd by about 6 years, that over 30 years ago now LOL!! We had it pretty much to ourselves until Dave Kennedy mentioned it on the surf report one day and pretty much how to get thre. That was the begining of the end. So after that we just hit Derrs more often , was still a while before everyone cottoned on. Kombis, beatles and VW station wagons definatelytackled the track better than most, and guys were putting wider tyres on the back of the VW Station wagons and making easy work of the sand. Good times.

Yep, go anywhere. Sleep in the back and a classic that hasn't reached drug money in value yet, still pick them up under 4k......not like this though.

My first 'real' surf car (1975), including the obligatory surf chick.

We are still together, by the way (not the car!)

Then we upgraded.

On our first long trip, South Aussie Great Ocean Road and back to Sydney.

Then we pimped the car

They were two great cars. Went from Cactus, to Noosa and everywhere in between over the years that we owned them. Four cylinder, manual, with a 1600cc motor. Top speed a 100km per hour (with a tail wind) up any hill 80 kph. Big hills, walking pace, the trucks used to overtake us.
They were gold!!!
