Just a heads up to anyone lucky enough to be in Coolangatta on Saturday the 8th October. Outside the old Retro Groove is a Surfboard Swap Meet.
Can get boards valued, swapped or bought.
Music too. Could be good.
Need to generate similar here in the West.
Yes thats what we need over here!!
Im keen to get an event of this type off the ground, we really need to get some numbers together!!
Retro board swaps / Retro boards are a tiny bit "Retro Retro" if that is possible.
In the period of very broadly 2000-2008, we saw a massive surge in single fins, twins, retro boards, full volume, etc.... I think that surge is fading now. There was also a surge in prices of 1960's and 1970's boards, but I think that has stabilised now too.
I still love 1970's singles, but (generally) the actual product from the 1970's doesn't go nearly as good as the modern interpretations, which include better fins, better templates, more certainty on rail shapes, etc. I guess it's partially about "hit and miss".... Many 1970's singles were a little bit of a miss.... Or at least one little aspect of the board being a miss.... But you look at modern interpretations like Channel Islands Single Fin Generation 1, and Generation 2 inspired by Rob Machado... They locked in some proven designs, added some great resin tints, and a leg rope plug.... and you have some proven performer fun boards. Plus these boards will generally look much better 25 years down the track.... (1975 + 30 = 2055, and 2005 + 30 = 2035... well it will be interesting to see what is going on in 2035 anyway...)....
