Fellas.. Your knowledge is required..
My stats. Fat and beginner skill level.
I'm currently 110kg. Slowly dropping. Before I even attempt to get in the waves I want to be under a 100. With a longer term goal of about 85kg..
I'm wanting to buy a foamie. Initially purely used paddling around the bay, building up my paddle fitness.. Once Christmas school holiday craziness is over, I'll 'attempt' to hit the waves. So hopefully by then I'm around 99kg or lower..
What size foamie would would float my fat ass?
8'0"x23"x3 3/8" - 86L
9'0"x 24"x3.5" - 98L
Go the 9 footer m8
A 98L foamie will have a ton of float. I was amazed a few years ago I swapped boards with a m8. He rode my 9'4 CW longboard & I rode his 7 foot foamie. The 7 foot foamie paddled & caught waves a lot easier than my longboard, performance was another story haha but thats the next step.
For what you plan, losing weight & getting paddle fit the 9 foot foamie is an excellent choice. Just gotta get out regularly, stay focussed & eat a good diet too. I don't mean starve yourself, just eat healthy food. If its an animal, the less legs it has the better it is for you. Cut out the crap
Stick with it & you'll get there
Legend..
Hurt a little bit laying down that much coin for a foam board. But I figure I'll either hang onto it for the novelty, or it should be a easy enough to sell on. I've never see any of the bigger sized boards in the second hand market.

Not sure where you are located, but if you are close to Cronulla, take a look in the El Nino store in Taren Point. Boards in there direct to the public at huge savings over what you will find elsewhere - even their own website. I've had a few larger boards from there for the kids and a 9ft 8 for myself. We have always had the surf school models and they are bombproof and paddle and surf well. They are heavy and are less performance biased than the new crop of MF style boards, but would definitely suit what you need. Also if you can wait for the opportunity, the surf schools often offload their old boards before the Summer season starts, so definitely worth a phone around. Good luck, and if you are committed to getting on the water - there are so many options. Once you have the confidence to venture into the shore break - nothing burns calories and builds ocean knowledge like bodysurfing.
I can't see how paddling around on a foamy will get your kg down and get you fit
I say that as i love my 666 and it gets me fit pretty quick when i have been slack. Yet that gets boring pretty quickly ,for me
I will throw in what worked for me, and it made me happy. Buy a clubby prone board. Can cover some massive ground, play in some ****ty waves for fun. I have fun on boat wakes with mine and when the surf is small and filled with greedy ****ing longboarders ...i will bring it out and school them kook
