As a absolute novice I want to take my eldest grandson fishing. I don't know a thing except for Doctor Google. Any tips ?

Prawns, everything eats a prawn. Or even dough or bread rolled into a small ball and squash it around the hook. small hook size 1 or something and let it float around near jetties. If there is heaps of current use a small sinker. Keep the line tight so you can feel the bite. And Burley with bread. Just mush it up in water and throw some in every now and then. Good luck.

grew up in that area
stick to Google and YouTube for the how too's
but, minnamurra river for flat head and blackies
lake Illawarra over the windang side near the van park for tailor, flatties and bream
stick to enclosed waters with kids, rock fishing is a nightmare just trying to keep a look of for your own damn self.
if there's no swell, windang Beach is good for whiting,

I agree with SP. Another consideration, my kids always enjoyed fishing with a float. Great fun watching the float bob around.

Assuming that as 'an absolute novice', you don't have fishing rods etc?
I would caution against buying the cheapest junk on the shelf.
'Eldest grandson' implies that there are others. So could be worth a small investment. Eitherway, the fishing line the reel comes with needs consideration. I bought my 5 year old (at the time) a $100 rod/reel combo, with a tiny 1000 size reel. I ended up needing to put some braid on the reel to stop the line coiling and knotting.

Also worthy of consideration.... the good ol' trusty hand line. Not going to get fishing much cheaper. Will still catch fish. Should still show whether the grandson has any interest in fishing (if they don't like fishing with a hand line, fishing with a rod and reel is unlikely to make much difference.
