www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/General-Discussion/Chat/George-Greenough-the-GoPro/ I started this thread in the general room... But on seconds thoughts, we'll probably have more fun with it in here!
A statement of facts;
1) George Greenough was a very early innovator of water cinematography, including the fact that he encased a motion picture camera in a waterproof housing, strapped it to his back, and shot some amazing footage at places like Lennox Head, NSW.
2) Modern Technology took the best part of 40 years to catch up, and sell the concept to the masses via devices like the GoPro
3) George has stated that with photography and cinematography, image quality is secondary to content, provided you have original content... content that nobody else has...
This leads me to 4...
4) GoPro (and similar) cameras have saturated us with crappy quality footage, of relatively repetitive content, however there is still the odd diamond in the rough...
5) But I often still watch it anyway!

grom man go pros are being used not just in sports. t.v shows like csi have been using them for a while. they used on in a car about to blow up. it got good footage for them and was cheap and disposable
Thanks for sending the avatar towball , No worries doggie any thing for you mate
I dont think technology took 40 years to catch up in terms of taking a camera in the water or any such action sport.
Whats happened is we now have a medium for every self glorifying wanker to post whatever they think makes them look good to the masses to try and prove their better than the next guy or show off, or promot something. Followed by a minority of people trying to show their mates stuff that don't all live in the same town. Gopro minimized the equipment to allow this to take advantage of one of the few unexploited sectors in sport left.
Ultimately I think gopro has set photography and cinamatography back not forward unlike people like GG and Warren Miller.
If it wasn't for the Internet there would be no gopro.
And yes I have one
What's that other product... Tri-pod mounted, you wear an arm band, and the camera follows you around... On concept it would give a much better quality product.
Do you think that the thread title has a funny ring to it?
GG has made a very valid point and no, I didn't really think about it too much because I don't really look at a lot of vids.
Now I find I'm asking myself "why don't I watch too many vids" and one of the main reasons is the point that GG is making, quality has gone out the window in favour of content.
Unless you have a close personal involvement in some aspect of a vid, then you're not really going to want to watch many of them if the quality makes photos of bigfoot look like they were shot in a studio by a pro.
Well this is slightly off topic - but it seemed appropriate to place it here - its one of the best vid's going around - the POV actually seems very real. Ok its football - but I think its awesome.
