G'day all,
Mid-aged 6ft 85kg beginner/inter sup paddler keen to try get into some without a paddle. Thing is, we mostly only have non-waves (hence the suping for starters!). For example boards that work well here are 'allrounders' or nalu types.
Sorry if this is something that has been asked before, but any recommendations for longboard model/what to look for in a board that'll work in absolute gutless ankle slappers?
Have thought it would be good to get a super narrow SUP, at least the deck'll handle a bit of knee paddling aswell, but any sups narrow enough to (sort of) comfortably prone paddle are all going to be highly rockered performance-pro sort of shapes (and exxy).
I suppose also should mention no need for noseriding or anything too flash, just want to get into 'em and cruise a bit.
Cheers for any thoughts or comments.
Hi and welcome.it seems you know what your talking about.
Gutless small waves you need the volume as you mentioned a sup.
Go for a flat type rocker which you mentioned also.
How about 10 x 23 1/2 x 3 1/4 that should get you going
or even 10.6 x 24 x 3 1/4 monster of a board.

... oh sht! whoops! was thinking the same thing hah. shouldadone more research first...

ok cool thanks.
So, I suppose the lazy question next.
Do you know of any production boards that would be similar dims?
being a bit of an experiment this I probably won't go custom.

No I wouldn't expect you would find anything close in those dimensions as standard.
Customs don't cost more than production/stock boards unless your adding extras.
Another idea is go for a glider/trim board 11 to 12 foot in length then love those ankle weal waves and are the best fun for seriously long rides.
Gliders look the goods!
Will look into them cheers.
... oh man i think this is going to work!
Gliders rock in the right conditions, can i add, if your starting out, get your hands on a second hand 96 Foamee, bit easier to paddle around and catches waves easy, and wont damage your facial features if you screw it up
I think I know what you're saying.
But yeah, no worries there I'm sure we do have the right conditions here. Surf break is a sloppy shoally straight-hander that is (literally) knee high on a big day.
Busy is ten happy 666ers spread out over a quarter acre. It is a total proner (forgive the blasphemy) free zone.
You could go Derek Hynd style one eyed and finless on a glider and still have room to spare.
But fark me those things are expensive! maybe a foamy is the way to go. they don;t seem to make 'em longer than around 9'6 though.
I need gliiiiiiiiiiidde...
... one eyed and finless... what a freak...
If knee high is as big as it gets, it is a straight hander and you want volume and glide keep an eye out for a old wind surfer board.
Na bro not an old windsurfer unless its the "original windsurfer " otherwise the rocker is long flat on tail to be fast. Rails thick and boxy doesn't work - tried it with limited success unless it's small and weak waves!
Hire a foamie for a lesson board to get you consistently on your feet.
But a large 'nose riding ' board at 10'6 gives you great wave catchable board.
If you stick with surfing and getting better performance waves, you can be in for the 'ride of your life.' Then you start getting a couple of boards to cover your local conditions.
Or mtb, winging, kiting or windsurfing when it's not offshore
The most important rule if life is "enjoy"!
There are way too many stressed people in the world
Yes there are
Yep I agree.
Suppose we are lucky here (Darwin) in that what we call waves don't justify getting too serious about missing out
Kite boarders are busier than surfers here too.
Funny having just read my last post about no proners this arvo a couple girls paddled out on longbaords and got a few! So it is doable after all.
I'll keep an eye out on the usual channels for something second hand. I see that there's no point getting too fussy on shape style, would never tell the difference.
Anything long and flat with a fin sticking out one end will do.
Keep an eye out for an Tuflite 11' Munoz board, production pop-out but I've not seen a bad review on them yet, I love mine.
