Reading between the lines in some topics I note not all manufactures supply fins when making a new board, surely these guys know what best suits the board design. Andy was talking about his fin set up and others mentioned he may have his current set up wrong, we know fins are a personal a thing but wouldn't it be a good start with a set up supplied by the board maker to start with? I know what works for me with different boards I own and of late have be ordering boards without fins which is a saving for me.Ive been suppled 7 and 8 inch centres for boards but I had custom made 7.5 inch which I find better. If your purchasing boards from Asia disregard this post

My set up is wrong if i'm after the "Bonzer" experience... which i'm not... The thing goes awesome as a single fin but I need some extra stability (training wheels) when it gets really steep and OH as i've spun out the single fin a few times and eaten a fair bit of sh1t... Really I just don't turn that hard or ever try and hit the lip so I don't really need the Bonzer drive thingy... But like you said, fin stuff is so subjective.

Tim Clarke custom builds the fin to suite his boards as does Marc Andreini. They both make the fin to match not just the board but the board and the specific rider and how the rider wants to surf to create the right balance...

But regardless, just talk to your shaper and they'll generally point you in the right direction and be prepared to experiment.

I guess another point is your stoked to pick up your new board , then you have to hunt for a fin set up that works?

Not really, I spoke to Ryan and he knows what I want the board for and how I wanted to surf, he suggested the Greenough 4a in either 8.5" or 9" so I ordered the 8.5" and I've locked that in the box now, love it and doubt i'll ever change it...

I did experiment a bit more with the 7'7" but love that one with the 7.5", middle of the box... its locked and I wont change it, just add the training wheels when it gets bigger but ideally I'd just like to improve my ability to where I don't need them either.

That said, I do like the Andreini idea of the shaper setting it for you... but then everyone is different and not everyone is into that

More insults your on a roll. Indeed I've experimented with fins found what works for me some 15 years back.
No black plastic super flex fins in my boards you know the ones made in a mould from Asia.

Well then mr experimental . Why did it take 8 years to try a thruster setup!!!!!!!
The only thing you experiment with is how far you can push mct before they tell you to ______

I always supply fins unless they really don't want ! I don't want someone ruining a board by going n getting a 50 buck plastic POS fin... Alkali all the way ... Again made in Australia is better,

Beautiful fins... I've had a bunch of them and the quality is first rate...

But had to go TA with my last one and Captain fin time before as they seem to have supply issues, couldn't supply me a Greenough for a few months, but that means high demand which must be a good thing... foir them

Not so far... Have you?

I do replace the screws with Alkali screws (I brought a bunch of them direct) though which means I have to drill out the holes a bit. Alkali use a thicker screw and I find it holds firmer.

I thought all boutique hipster boards did come with a fin! I usually think I know best anyway... But I have learnt. All single fins should just come with a Greenough 4a in the centre of the box

Yep, even had problem with Aussies fins, just depends on the width of box, what fin blank was put in it when it was installed and the fin.

Maybe what your putting in it isn't wide enough

But I hate when the fin is too big, easier to pack them out then it is to sand them down

Also with a fin box being long and plastic will always tempt fate of not being perfect (thinking emoji )
