Due to the injury crisis amongst us older surfers ...
Posture and surfing ..
Take a look at Longboarders sitting on boards ...a lot hunch with back bent .
Tip ..when waiting for wave sit straight with hands on thighs make a conscious effort to keep back straight same when sitting at home .
Get a sore back from paddling ...glute stretches, cobra, dead cat exercise.
Sit ups ..not a fan but try planking ..
Yoga Pilates Thai che all help ..
practice flexibility & you will notice quicker to feet and back/hip problems diminish .
Hopefully others can add to this thread .

yep good points...i had my first "soft tissue"injury last year, when i tore my calf muscle....not too bad as it healed in afew weeks but it was abit of a wake up call .

Speaking with the physio she said to keep surfing as long as possible you need to keep a strong core and be as flexible as you can be.

I recently made myself a copy of a "goof Board" which has been a great tool for strengthening all the main surfing muscles and core

Spend 15 minutes on this thing and you are dripping with sweat!

It has also got my balance to another level...or back to where it was 10 years ago, so my cross stepping and nose riding is alot smoother.

Finally i ride a long board skate board.

this is also good on land surf training but has also resulted in some missing bark and afew bruises, so I am not sure if the benfits out weigh the dis advantages...but it is heaps of fun!

I also use the skateboard to practice cross stepping and foot work by making the trucks really loose and walking it up and down with the board stationary on a carpet matt inside...this is simple and fun and gets the two step, cross step to hang 5 drilled into your muscle memory.

yeah bazz. when you sit in the water. flex your ankles up every so often.

now, I have a foot problem and knee on the other. really have struggled.

three days of walking lungs, no right down , just hips square and even, knee move forward need directly over the foot, and seriously I haven't felt this strong getting up for years - even a decade or so
I am doing to 50 morning and night.

sure its old school but really works. it going to be my routine daily whether I'm injuried or not

mac, theses are what you need to do. will stabilize your knee /leg

first thing first - know your limitation .... then adapt to the circumstance

Not all of us can be the ( cough , ahem , pfffff ) Asea who makes light work of 2 or 3 Steak & Kidney Pies then goes forth and absolutely smashes Kirra at will ... somehow his Lordship is then able to smoke 2 more Pastry bags , a carry pack of Beers & complete yet another Swap n sell board coup .... all in the space of 2 hours

I have a homemade balance board, which I don't use too much lately, but recently I've been trying a X step trainer I made.

It's just an 8ft long, 6 inch half round, with a 2 inch wide flat section planed on the top and set about 1.5 inches off the ground.

Not really sure if it helps because I have not had it for too long.

Cost me nothing because I already had the log up the back yard. Had to make a wedge for one end because the log was twisted.

Skateboards, on the flat not hills, just carve back and forward.
I've got one big enough (6'6") to walk up and down, can cross step on it but not on the water.
Push ups. 100 a day in 4 lots of 25 for the last 18 months. Hurt and are annoying, but have removed lots of back issues.
Roller thing to crunch the back before and after though.
Sit ups, 100 a day ditto, easier and hurt less than push ups, don't seem to have lessened the beer gut noticeably tho.
I work at my desk standing up (high desk I made myself), have a long skateboard nearby to walk up and down.
And a high chair to sit on when I'm tired.
And I'm still old, fat, unfit, and can't surf.

Looks good Ob, I really need to start doing that to improve my cross step. I'm meant to be joining a new longboard club in a couple of weeks

And good advice Baz...I had a pretty annoying shoulder pain up until 3 weeks ago that I'd had for about 10 weeks. Chiro said my main problem was my tendency to slouch. I've got everyone at work nagging me not to slouch now which I appreciate

I have spent the past 12 months rehabbing from hip surgery & then slipping a disc in November, I was out of the water for about 10 months last year.

My main program has been using the local hydrotherapy pool. It is heated to 37degrees & is 1.1m - 1.4m. (PBC Pool for anyone on Sthn GC). Allows me to hold my stretches for deeper & longer while supported by water, heat is amazing. I have gone atleast 3 - 4 times a week.

Have focused on strength, flexibility & stability exercises. The difference it has made to my surfing is amazing. I have a "pop-up" not a "climb up", can drive my bottom turns on backhand/ take off blah blah. The surgery on my hip helps as well.

Agree sitting up on my board can get uncomfortable & need to watch my posture.

Now Back to shopping for a board after snapping my 10ftr last week......

Mick,
I had slouchy, annoying rotator cuff issues in both my shoulders for a long time and finally fixed them with dead hangs.
www.mixedmartialarts.com/forums/UnderGround/Does-this-exercise-cure-99-of-shoulder-pain:2562903
Took a couple of months but now that I see the difference i'm doing them almost every day. Just need something to hang off.

My knees were also causing me grief and I fixed them by doing deep resting squats (get right down like an old Indo gentleman :-).

cheers

If you can balance your board so the nose is down and the tail is up. Keeps your abs active and less slumping

Of course when your waiting for a wave. Do not surf like this

Those deep squats are good especially for those of us not as young and who sit at a desk most of the day.
Does look like your trying to choke one off when your doing them though

bob margetts who's been treating me has been telling me of ages I have a slight herniated lower disc.

after not really believing him because it wasnt really sore. hes right. every time I slump - like over a surfboard, bending over at my building work or the bloody seat in my work car, that foot pain comes on.

looks like a needle to trick the nerve the bit of disc isn't touching it- in rough lay mens terms.

apparently after a while the body eats up that bit of fragment.

in the mean time I have to keep really straight.

I'm starting to feel my age

I got the latest Apple Watch from Santa and absolutely love it. Mainly for training but very helpful for work as well.

The data it collects is phenomenal and very accurate. Keeps me honest.

Also sends me an alert if my resting heart rate exceeds 120 beats p/m so I can get the fark to hospital during a cardiac arrest.
Hoping I won't have to use this feature ??

I do a fair bit of planks both face down and on the sides. I elevate my ankles with a foam roller that makes it more challenging . Paddling a sup in flat water is also good
