I left a query in the Midlength room but thought I would raise a separate topic.

I have been looking for a new board a bit different from what I have been riding (which hasn't been much lately) and started to look at quads in midlength and longboards. I haven't ridden a whole lot of quads but don't mind the different feel they provide. I'm not a fan of 2+1 as i don't, can't and not interested in nose riding. I know others won't agree with this.

This led to a look at twin fins. I have never ridden a twin fin and not sure if they are a gimmick made popular by Toryn Martyn and Mikey February (these guys could make a fence paling look good on a wave) or if they have some design justification.

I am not familiar with the local Gold Coast shapers that specialize in quads and twins? Most shapers can put the extra fin box in a board that was otherwise designed as a thruster/2+1. The Tollhurst range features a lot of quads but apart from being expensive, I believe they are all made OS. They are probably great boards but not in stock anywhere from what I can see.

What are others experience with either quads or twin fins in longer boards?

Cheers

PS: My current surfing ability doesn't really justify getting over sensitive about technical design but it is fun thinking about it. Now I am getting closer to 60 than 50, I have really noticed a slow down and stiffness in my popup, reduced wave count due to some weight gain and reduced fitness/strength. Particularly as I haven't been surfing as much as I would like.

Nah he's in Lennox these days.
Had one of his longish Quartets (6'6) which was a great all rounder. Also have a 7'2 Duo of his currently as well as a few shorter NPJ's. Great boards, solidly built.
Also have a look at Gary McNeill. I have a 6'10 twin of his that is a great board. He does a couple variations. Mines the narrow round tail but he also does a wider diamond tailed version. He's based around the Goldy and is quite reasonably priced for PU build considering todays "hipster" pricing.

Gary McNeill makes great twins and his builds are strong. Can't go wrong with a board from Gaz.
Also have a look at a DMS Almond if you want something wider in the nose and tail. He has a promo code going for $200 off stock boards at the moment. DMS200 is the discount code.

Ready for some great looking twins? He's just South of the border.
I recently acquired a 7'2" twin and I am super impressed with both the build quality and the performance of the board.
Google his website. It won't let me post a link.

Same board. In some light it looks yellow and some it looks more green. Such a cool tint. I had never heard of SJS but I was thinking while I was riding this in cyclone Cody waves the other day that if anything happened to this board I would order another one in a heartbeat. That's how much I like it.

Hold the phone. My old flatmate from 30 plus years ago dropped around and he bought my 7'5" Burton twinny from me for his missus for her birthday. I reckoned it was too much foam but he figured she would be ok as would only ride it in small stuff. This is only last week. Anyway he now concedes it is probably a bit big. It's 22+"s wide and 3&1/8" thick. I think 58 litres but distributes it well so it doesn't feel cumbersome at all. Could be a great buy for you Danelli. Has the strong bi-axial glassing. EPS/epoxy.
Plenty of foam and goes great from small to well overhead waves. Paddles and catches waves so well but still turns hard off the tail.

He bought it from me for $650 with a set of keel fins. PM if you want his number.

Hey mate, SJS looks nice. He makes some great looking boards. I take it you're running upright twins in that? Do you size down a bit because of the channels or just your fave template?

I'm by no means anything but a longboarder. I've just taken possession of my latest from Dave Verrall at Diverse. He copied one of his earlier designs, that I had bought second hand years ago. It was past it's prime and so he just made a new one to the same specs.

If you look at his website, diversesurf.com.au/, you'll see he's also into twins, as well as all kinds of other shapes and sizes. Could be worth a shot. He's a nice bloke too. Board was completed on time, as promised. He's good to deal with. Worth a shot.

Does Dave have a showroom/outlet these days? Had some excellent boards from Dave before he eloped to Bali.

He's back in Tweed Heads I think, but not sure where. I also don't think he has a showroom, but some local retailers do sell some of his boards. His website has plenty of photos and you can custom order. Although, it may be better to just call him up and say hi.

When by board was ready, I just arranged to meet him at Currumbin. Having driven up to QLD to visit for Christmas. Bit like a drug deal in a car park....

Although he's not on the Gold Coast have a look at Mark Richard's site. Twin fin specialist with a number of different models to choose from. That's me holding one back in the early 80's
