whats your warm and fuzzy Feeling moment?

You know that moment that feeling you get when everything you love about surfing hits you
time stands still and you couldn't be happier.
maybe it's taking the kids surfing and they stand up for the first time, you remember that feeling.
the drive to pick up a new board arriving to see it sitting there waiting like a new born baby.
that road trip with the boys and a moment hits you ,,what a moment it my life.
that WAVE ..the wave you remember and never forget or the wave you surfed better than ever.

i get that feeling sitting down the beach with a bunch of very old mates
talking about life ,going out for a surf ,or a wave in the lineup.

Winter 2014, my Dad, Step mum, Wife, my mate Mick with his wife and son. We were at Dad's place near Taree and they wanted to see us surf (why I'm not sure, perhaps they thought the boards were all for show) and they wanted to do a drive up the beach to get some driftwood and see the sights. He didn't have racks, but we needed his car to fit everyone in, so we ended up loading the boards on with sofa cushions and rope through the windows. Wind was SE which meant we needed to go north to Crowdy. Swell was small, but it was clean and the sun was crystal. So we drove along the beach for about 2K. Mick and I sat there and took left after right after left until the sun went down. The beach was deserted, so the break was ours alone for the whole time, and whilst the rides weren't long, or necessarily big, they were really lots of fun. After surfing for about an hour and a half, shoulders and jaws aching from laughing so much we finally succumbed to the waving and honking from those on the beach, who had become bored much more quickly than we did. It was so cold by the time we got changed it took over an hour to warm up. Whenever Crowdy comes up in conversation, we always remember "that day on Crowdy beach"

A few weeks ago i surfed a novelty break with a couple of handful of grommets. It was super cool to see all the kids froffing and giving it their all..

But really for me its anyone that smiles, on Sunday i surfed Mullaloo and was amusing myself watching a goat boat flounder around, anyway he pulled into a nice bomb with a smile so big it was infectious, found myself hooting him and chatted after he paddled back out.. Closely followed by a SUPer pulling into a super clean wave again with huge smile..

Anyone with a big smile in the line up will always lift the spirit..

Even caught on film.... The greatest warm fuzzy's for me have been sharing the Surfing life with the kids theres been sooo many warm fuzzys but this shot capture the young blokes first ever stand up wave, rode it all the way to the beach. On the video you can hear me basically choking up with pride. He was 5 at the time.

And the daughters first stand up, she was 4 !

And both still surfing today and loving it, every time I surf with them its warm and fuzzy feelings. Young blokes now 12 and the daughter is 10.

Daughter at 9

Son last week in Scholastic titles at 12.

These moments with the kids are all warm and fuzzy but their first wave each would have to have been the warmest fuzziest feeling ever. :)

Friends stayed with us for a few days last summer. They have a boy 5 & a girl 11. The girl has been super keen on surfing the last couple of summers & they asked if I could give her some lessons. Coz the parents don't come from a surfing background. I borrowed a friends soft top surfboard. But she loved riding my CW whalebone...right into the beach lol My board got a couple of small pressure dings on the front rocker, but her stoke had me uncaring. Kids were a couple of the best behaved kids I've ever met. Dad's ex police & mum's a teacher. Hope they head down to stay with us again this summer. Was a pleasure, gave me the warm & fuzzy's in & out of the water

Great pics & story S69

Road trip to Sydney the last week.
Stayed with a mate who I lived with in share houses 30 years ago, and his family.
Both of us have had families, but because he moved from Melbourne to Sydney, then London, back to Sydney, lost contact.
I had never met his 18 and 16 year old children.
Re connected through Seabreeze, after Sydney he came south with us for a couple of days in Merimbula.
With another couple of mates, the third member of the 30 year ago share houses joined us unexpectedly.

Great afternoon (sup) surf on the Merimbula bar for a couple of hours, board swaps, banter, fun.

Beers afterwards, close to a perfect afternoon.

Strange.
Daughter surfs natural, snowboards goofy, not sure how you really tell snowboarding, but I am far from expert.
But............
I "surf" natural, quotes because calling what I do "surfing" is stretching the definition.
But when I started to skate at maybe age 54, I ("naturally") did it goofy - I can't stand on my left leg and push with my right, have to do it opposite.
Unco.
Expert advice was to change, so feet were the same way in skate and surf, or it would confuse my brain and everything, but couldn't do it.
Chrispy advised me to skate "Mongo" (?) I think. Natural stance, but push with the front foot.
Working so far.
I'll claim this as a nose ride

And this as a cross step...

I think end result of that wasn't pretty, but with my careful selection of paths with grass on the sides, I bounce fairly well.
Mongo skating
If that's what it is called.

Yeah you can push with your front or back foot skating. I don't think it matters unless your pushing over a rough surface, like rough enough to trip you up. I think its personally more beneficial to have a foot on the back of the skateboard and push with the foot that will be on the front in case you do push over a rough patch. Less chance of nose diving.

I skate goofy & always surfed natural in the past.

Have snowboarded about 10 times now. Mostly just one day trips with a couple of double day trips, usually really stiff after one day so don't benefit from a second day....I was only comfortable facing the mountain & switchfoot to remain facing the mountain on my first 4 or 5 times. Then favoured natural, got the feel of backhand snowboarding. But then changed my mind & prefered goofy & have been snowboarding goofy the last few times I've snowboarded....snowboarding is very different to surfing and skating in my opinion. Its snowboarding, it is what it is, not surfing or skating.

Started surfing a SUP in small summer waves a couple of years ago at my local left. Found it easier to paddle into waves goofy & I was switching after the bottom turn but then just stayed goofy after awhile. I just switch to cutback now.

And it was the start of riding a longboard 3 or 4 years ago & a SUP that got me into switching. I switch a lot on a longboard, bloody hopeless at cross stepping up to the nose, next thing I gotta work on I guess. But its a lot of fun and personally fullfilling to be able to cutback and do floaters switchfoot. Started doing it on the shortie now, just little fat wave floaters.

Heapsa fun & I wouldn't recommend trying to break anyone from their natural or unnatural instincts. Any ability can be improved. I guess like if your trying to be world champ maybe its best to concentrate at one stance. I remember at first switching was like pressing the ejector seat button, but it doesn't take too long too train your brain to accept more than one stance & I think its beneficial. From a fun perspective at least

Wrong mick. Us Mongo skaters (Was not a term when i grew up) are considered disabled with our push style technique it is just considered ugly and supposedly makes it harder to set up for tricks... nothing to do with bumps and stacks

Skating switch has nothing to do with how you push

When I was skating pretty much daily through the 80's. The sidewalk paths were made of slabs with cracks, grass growing though the cracks and uneven alignment. You didn't want weight on the front foot

Kids these days have no idea how lucky they are with skate parks all over the place. We were just shoo'ed from one shopping centre to another jumping off curbs and steps. And of course going head over heals on those dodgy sidewalks

I'll give you a not so warm feeling I got years ago.

I made a deck out of off cuts under the house, my brother had a canary yellow ford and had a can he used to touch it up.I made a deck painted it yellow and headed up to the local shops having a blast until the rather large owner of the Chinese take away stopped me pushed me off my board and then he looked me in the eye and snapped my desk in half.

LOL well gave you a funny story to tell now at least Mac

Reminds me of the time I'd bought this Vision Joe Johnson. Deck alone was $80 & I'd had it for just over a week. I was doing a pretty fair pace down a hill headed to the local shops on the road when this old bloke just turned out in front of me. I had to just jump run and my board went under the car hitting a wheel and got smashed up under the old blokes brown valiant st wgn. He's stopped and started going off at me, I've grabbed my board & its a write off. I'm pissed and telling him he didn't give way & he's telling me I shouldn't be on the road. Then tells my mum & I got in trouble with her & she's telling me to stay off the road as well lol

He was an old neighbour from a street behind who had given us a couple of kittens when we were little. He knew us all pretty well.
