So....

Who's into weed?

Tangled around your leash and fins?

Not the huffy puffy stuff ;-)

Seems to be a hell of a lot of weed at just about every beach break I visit, it gets tangled around my leash and is like dragging a bag of concrete behind you whilst getting slammed by consecutive set waves.

Any one got any solutions for this soup surfing problem?

I avoid it at all costs. A few years ago I was paddling through a really thick patch. Caught on the leash then stuck in the impact zone. Head high sets breaking top to bottom almost. The more I was pounded the more weed collected on the leash. Sets subsided, undid leash and slowly paddled in. There must have been at least 5kg of weed. Maybe more. Just avoid it. If I do paddle thru it I pull leash tight and place under my body when paddling and maybe keep feet up bent at knees if on a longboard.

I hear ya Bigmc, I got hammered the other day at our local beach break which is why I was asking if anyone else has any solutions?

The whole break was weed soup just inside the impact zone, I ended up with around 10kg of the stuff tangled around my leash and stuck right in the set zone, copped an absolute hammering.

You could hardly even swim in it because it was so thick, felt like you couldn't get any stroke traction.

After what happened to those guys in the Netherlands with the froth I was wondering if weed has caused any sinister outcomes?

As far as the leg rope goes I saw one guy paddling out with his trailing behind, he had one of those leashes that has a release pin at your ankle and had pulled the pin.

It worked to release the weed but then he lost his board and was struggling big time to swim in it whilst getting slammed. Ended up sharing my board with him as we washed in.

Scary stuff, never had anything like that happen before.

Cheers

Local weed catchin beachie is sh1t unless its small anyway, so I just surf without a leggie. More likely to hit a shark than another surfer so all good

Our point breaks get kelp infestation in the fall, and on bigger days, we spend the whole session paddling through the stuff, sitting inside the mess, and surfing thru the blades, board bouncing over the kelp bulbs.
We actually grab the kelp to paddle, as fin drag overcomes any chance of paddling to move forwards.
Wait for high tides.
Wait for the 3rd big swell.
Paddle directly behind someone.
Rinse off your wetsuit and body to rid kelp rot smell.
