Given that Hawaii has had some of the biggest waves ever paddled where the **** was Laird?

Not on 666 - That was kai Lenny
Not paddling - That Was Dorian and Arraon Gold

I saw his head on a ski in Pointbreak 2 - does that count? He also had a few forgettable lines to say.

He is too old and is now the proud owner of a longboard

Maybe he is out surfing some new toys or spots that we will find out about later. He has a good track record in these endeavours. Jaws used to be his baby but now it's a circus out there. He is probably surfing elsewhere having a ball away from the circus.

You guys are giving Laird such a hard time.....maybe because he has been there done that......he much more than us armchair surfers is aware of how supremely fit you have to be to endure big wave beatings? Freedom is deciding where and when you want to go surfing.....maybe he feels more free these days?

Maybe - but he has been in many similar situations for a lot longer. He is a classic first adopter / discoverer - Captain Cook did not sail his boat that fast round the world compared to the fellas today, or the Wright bros in their planes - but he did things before many thought you could. Not many surfed Jaws before Laird. Or Mavericks before Jeff Clark. Sure their efforts pale in comparison to what some people do now - but they paved the way. They were doing it before anyone else. I am not trying to compare what he has done to those great explorers and inventors from a historical global perspective. But in the surfing world Laird has been one of the most influential ever. So I am happy to let him go skiing and play some volleyball this winter They have had some unreal snow of late - first good season for a while in North America.

I would suggest that not many have even come close to this wave he got - or would have had the composure to handle it like he did. Legend.

Yep he pioneered the extremities of large surf, and still pushes the limits....something will pop up soon and every one will go WOW again I'm guessing.

Selling something that has his name on it.

Coffee, golf cart, yoga, 666rs, clothes, dildos... Who knows ? he loves an endorsement deal...

That Chopes wave at the time was madness and is still a mighty slab of a wave but since that i reckon others have taken it to a new level..
That wave showed people what was possible now look at what people consider surf able....

I got respect for what he's done in the past but when he mouthed off about G Mac or Tom Cotty or whoever not completing because they got mowed by the whitewater it kind pissed my off...I reckon this winter he's had plenty of time to put his money where his mouth is and ride the biggest wave ever...hopefully he's done it in secret and we will all be amazed once more

To me, bagging Laird's performance - even if he never surfs again - is like saying Mark Richards wasn't as good as Medina. Or that Greg Noll and Pat Curren surfing Waimeia was no big deal.

Laird's a legend in surfing who has nothing to prove to anyone in my book.

MR is a legend.. Surfer and human and he would hate being called that word..

Medina and laird aren't even close to MR in my book..

Good surfers but not even close to legends for me..
