this pic reminded me of my quiver.
it got me thinking …..its time for me to make a change
but what have i leaned from my equipment.

my quiver had a hole in it for a while, it won't cover surfing a beach break with a 9' performance longboard.

the problem is I've spent to much time on 9' 666ers in beach breaks and i am struggling to make a educated view of what i want.

any help would be appreciated longboarders.

So ya got a 9'0 HP LB & a 9'0 666

I'd say a 10'0 log for the summer days up to waist...

& a shorter high volume board for the bigger days. Short & wide for big/fat. Long & narrow for big/sucky like 6'4 x 20.5 x 2 5/8 & 7'0 x 19 x 2.5 (more if over 90kg)

4 or 5 boards can cover a lot of territory. Small/windy, small/not windy, really bloody small but clean, big/fat & big not so fat.

thanks Mick

mate my 10' log is a keeper

and i sold my 9' bear performance longboard a while ago (I'm a dickhead)

i have 2x 9' 666ers i have used for beach breaks and im over 666 ATM… why because they have ****ed my flexibility ,,the old saying use it or lose it applies when you have a back like mine.

I've just got back into yoga and I'm now frothing for more prone surfing.

i have had a 7'6" for a while and reluctant to use as my fitness and back are farked.

so I'm looking for a 9' longboard.

my experience tells me with my flexibility and fitness volume will help,as i know late take offs would be challenging

so shape will be the key to getting as much performance as i can get from a hi vol 9' board ,,

The good thing about 666 riding is real surfing feels so good after you've been riding them. So much more maneuverable...I had a similar problem after I got into LB'ing. I'd been riding a firewire hellfire 6 x 20 x 2'5 which felt like the best board I'd ever owned in winter. I bought my first LB just before summer & loved how easy it was to paddle into waves early & fly down the line on little waves. A good day came along & I felt like the firewire had sprung a leak & I was sinking.

I've got another board the same volume as that firewire now but I have transitional boards in between making it a lot less of a shock switching boards...some yoga & some time out on the shorter boards & you should be right mate

My current quiver, bold are the boards I ride most often

8'10 x 32 x something Starboard - Summer light onshore or just small with no push...considering selling since I bought the 10'0 but will probably keep due to outlay$
10'0 x 24 1/4 x 2.5 Log - up to head clean conditions/fat
9'3 CW Whalebone - needs fixing but awesome board...would use in over chest fat conditions, but favouring the log to learn cross stepping atm
6'4 x 21.5 x 2.75 - Whalebone alternative, great transitional after summer board
6'4 x 20 x 2.5 - Bali backup
6'2 x 19.75 x 2.5 - goto board
6 x 21 x 2.5 - ride this board alot coz it suits my local

When I was riding longboards and mid lengths the break that I was surfing mostly is a pretty easy beach break so I'd like them flatter up forward with a bit of tail kick. They tend to trim faster and dont push water like a more rockered board they paddle faster and nose ride better. They get up and go quicker and if your going faster the turn Is going to be better. This type of board would probably suit a long pointbreak too. If you're surfing punchier beach breaks or reef breaks then a bit more rocker might help. I guess it depends on where you're surfing and what you want to do on a wave .

What he said
And
Pulled in tail and reasonably narrow nose if your not going to be up there much.
Go wider If your going to head nose ward or want more volume, a wider nose is a good place to pick up some volume and a wider front should catch waves easier.

Talk to some shapers and see what they suggest.

Thread killer.

Good advice...

Good point in the original pic too, find one you like and ride it to death.

Quivers are great but a lot of variety can mess with your head and surfing..

yep SP thats a given but it dont stop there.

i think its good to get other surfers experiences what worked and what didn't for them.

recommendations of boards maybe even some pics.

im a kook thats been surfing for years and i always talk to a shaper.

at the end of the day i will pick my board from the input of others

as well as shaper and finally on my own experiences.

im not going to take advice of others or a shaper if its never worked before.

maybe its a process of illuminations...

For what it's worth I've never heard a bad word about the SDR whalebones either. One in 9'1-9'3 would do the job well I reckon.

SP IMO thats so true mate. I have had the same longboard for maybe three years the same three kneeboards for five years and my two 666ers for five years I have mastered none of them but I feel comfortable on all of them.
Ive seen so many blokes change bords before they can cross step before they can do cheater fives hang ten or even do a decent turn changing fins dimensions , volumes etc a good surfer can jump on a crap board and make it look sweet I cant
