Went and visited a shop run by a guy I occasionally surf with, he showed me a new model he's started to make with a quad fin setup , he reckons another mate of ours has one in a diamond tail that he uses as a quad most of the time, he says it's incredibly loose.

This on was a 9'4" x 23 x 3.

Looked pretty standard apart form a noticeable double conc through the tail.

Not really my cup of tea, but at least it has the option of going to a single.

yeah, i thought so too, it's the kind of arse you'd seen on a noserider, but I'm sure it would not be a great noserider.

Maybe it's got something to do with the fact that quads are a bit like twinnys and they often have a big arse, I should have asked him why?

Yes Lacey Horses for courses but I like the looks of a single fin longboard like you're noserider

Hard to comment without seeing the whole board...but for mine that whole fin placement looks a bit to far forward

It looks a bit odd to me with that wide tail. A pic of the whole board would have been better. The centre box looks too far forward.

Never had a longboard set up as a quad but here's an 8 footer I had some years back. It went pretty good.

The world is moving. Quads rock on most boards - there is no reason that they should not work on mals as well. Embrace change and give it a crack. There are lots of performance benefits from quads - especially when its big and hollow. No reason that a longboard shape could not be adapted for such use. I have been riding them for over 6 years now and can not really find fault with them at my level of surfing. I am no pro. Just a fella who likes to get a few waves now and again.

I think there is nothing better than knowing that your board has an extra bit of hold when you are steaming down the line through critical sections. My 6'10" is the first gun I have had with a quad setup and it just makes me feel so much more comfortable when it gets gnarly. Lots of blokes over here ride thrusters and ride them bloody well. Personally though I feel safer on the quad.

You've been riding longboard quads for 6 years?totally different board design required from short to longboard quads imo that board in the photo is all wrong where's Roy it's an outrage

It may be all wrong, but I vaugly recall that the first time me and Vanders surfed with Lance up at woopi, he had one of his boards with a big square tail set up as a quad.

It was a couple of years back so I maybe wrong about the setup, but one thing I can remember very well is that lance wiped the floor with us that shesh.

No reason why it wouldn't work. My 9 footers were always singles and 2+1's

macas favourite longboard was a quad.....I had so much fun on that board surfing a fat greenmount wave. super loose and fast. he could noseride it and walk the board effortlessly . I agree with laceys and teds post

There's a bloke on the Northern Beaches making a 10 fin micro fin set up. Can't find a link, but it was in the paper last week.

I think I'm gonna have a 10 foot board made with a 10 fin set up, one for every foot. He reckons it reduces drag, but adds so much more hold, due to the co-efficient of the many micro fins.
