said no more boards this year but couldn't resist this one - 6 foot 6 approx. 1970 tern single fin - piece of Tassie surfing history
If you are looking for info on this board look up Vintage surfboard collectors on FB, heaps of people with great knowledge
Just a word of warning - if you are going to restore it yourself - be prepared for a very long battle !!
Born in Tasmania in 1964 Tern Surfboards were the creation of one of Australia’s true soul surfers, Leigh Steven.
“We started off making boards under my parent’s house until the roasts started to taste of resin, then we had to move into a real factory’.We’ve never stopped surfing and shaping boards. Over 25,000 boards later under the Steven name and Thousands of different trends in surfboard design, we’ve decided the boards we were making in the seventies were the most fun to make and the most fun to ride.
RETURN OF THE TERN!!!
We are re creating all of the great models from the 70’s into the early 80’s using original ‘resin tint’ techniques and premium finishing. Think of it like getting your favorite album on Vinyl re mastered by the Original Artist.
He is now shaping out of his son's shop in Torquay. Perhaps Tux or Simondo can go grab some snaps for us
i thought that was the current model down there!
Funny but nasty
Yes Prawnhead, that's not a very nice thing to say about our tassie friends.

Nice tas.
But
When you fix it up give the fin edges a sand.
Humming is not good.
I havent heard the Tern but if its history great score
Brand more well known in the southern states then up north .had the chance to buy a similar board about 2 years ago but stuffed around and missed out . Talked to a few old board collectors and they reckoned if I saw one come up again grab it .lucky enough to find this one sitting at the back door of a house I visited on the weekend
Thanks for the tips ted and sp . plan is to drop it off at Tim Clarke , local board shaper in Devonport , for some patch up work .probably have a surf on it then hang it on the wall .
my patch up jobs are pretty basic

Thanks for the tip mate . Lucky tassie is a pretty small place .and some of the boys in Hobart know the tern boards pretty well . Apparently they were originally Turn boards and the name change occurred around 1970 .
Nice find TD, there were hundreds of these made, the tern 6'6" rounded pin,I bought one new in 74-75 for $75.
mine was stolen from where I stashed it in the dunes at clifton after a surf one day, there were so many made you would never be able to pick yours out on the beach.
I would think this could at the end of the production run as I can't remember seeing any with the flyer, unless it was a custom.
2MT is in regular contact with Leigh and might be able to give you some more info if you send him a pick.

75-76 maybe, I think Leigh was shaping mostly thrusters under "LS" brand by the late 70s, but my memory is fading a bit these days

Like I said the surfing community in tassie is pretty small so we all get on pretty well , in saying that the inter club comps are pretty full on We all want to win at the end of the day
