There is a proposal to build a pool at Cottesloe beach. Some images from the most recent design concept are available here: www.facebook.com/OceanPoolsForPerth
This could heavily negatively affect Cottesloe's surf break. There is a public meeting this Thursday 5-6pm when pool proponents will put forward their design concept to council. Surfers are strongly opposed to the pool and would appreciate anyone to rally with them to let council know that this design is detrimental for surfing.

Change the design to include a artificial reef and we will all be happy.. I'd like to see a good left and right breaking out to sea there.!
does the proposal have any scope for enhancing the local waves (create a smooth reflective outer wall to send wedges down the beach etc the wall might be prohibitively expensive due to the heights required, but worth a bit of modelling etc)? or has anyone speculated on such ideas as a compromise if the pool idea has political momentum?
genuine query for the SaveCott guys as i don't get on FB much.
all the old boys from the surf clubs and winter swmming clubs down there would be loving it for the next decade or so at least if it happened...

The people pushing the pool are interested in the pool, not surfing.
Initial research included an artificial reef off the tip. Luan Nguyen's research stated "... the submerged reef is suitable for learners and armature (sic) surfers but not suitable for more advanced or expert surfers". A new beginner reef, yay.
Latest concepts mention "possible artificial surf reef". Given the way governments are tightening belts, don't expect possibilities to become realities.
Also, who would like to surf over the rocks that they use in Perth groynes if they did build a reef? That's an accident waiting to happen.

of course they are only after the pool, but if you are vocal enough and willing to compromise, you might be able to incorporate something really worthwhile into their actual design.
from the perspective of seeing similar types of projects get bandied around in my work environment, you are better off trying to incorporate the best aspect you can in the design rather than demanding an offset item that would cost more than the actual project itself!!! tweaking that wall to maximise reflection and still mitigate scour in front of the tea room if possible would be the go imo.
re: surfing over rocks from groynes - have you ever dived over a few different examples of "natural reef" in the metro that most of us regularly surf on, on a calm day? i can point out a couple of cheese graters around the state as well to check out that might change your perspective or just stick to sand bars, no wait.. hitting one of those could also be an accident waiting to happen. maybe just go down to the cott pool and swim laps?

It sounds like a great idea. The addition of a sculpted wave or two would be a bonus though.
I've always thought the council should provide two d2 or whatever the largest front end loader the mines have. They could push sand up and down extend the banks. Make perfect little sand points all the way from trigg to city beach. The point would work year round, seconds and thirds would be a frames scarves would have a couple wedge waves. You could even bring more sand in to extend the beach
