Hi all,
So im thinking of getting a fish made by south coast surfboards in torquay, i have done alot of reading into quads or twins in fishes, and it seems quads are much more versitile. However what quads should i run and what fin cluster should i be looking at?
Cheers,
Mitch

Go the twinny. It's how fish are meant to be.

4+3+2=5
That's covering your bets.
Gotta admit I haven't surfed a twinny since an early 80's twinny Bennet fish I wish I'd kept instead off hack sawing the fins off to repair lost fins on a thruster & leaving out for the rubbish collection in about 1986. Really need to have another go...but would havta go with the all bets covered option with the nifty new age of removable fins we can play with today
What kinda fins, generally average fronts with smaller backs I guess...but hey, playing around with fins can be fun. So many variables with waves & surfing hardware. If you have a few sets of fins mix & match. If you have friends with diff sizes, try out some diff sizes. Fins can make a lot of difference, but it depends a lot on waves & your own personal ability. Unless your fully pro or surfing death waves it aint gonna matter too much. Just don't get sucked into paying way too much for brands, I mean like over $75 for a set of 3 or $100 for a set of 5...search past threads for further info.
I've got a 5'7 at home from Ian Chishom at South Coast - its a wide nosed single fin and goes like an absolute rocket. Its a beautiful looking board too, and hangs on my wall when I'm not using it.
The only thing I'd do differently would be to go for 6+4oz glass on the deck next time to be more resistant to deck depressions!
Ps, If Ian's making you an old school fish, go for glassed in keels - You'll never look back!
Enough plugs for twin(forward or back, both work, one looser than the other) tri, quad and quad plus nubster. So the standard set up.Buy a 5 fin st to start(Indo fins on eBay)After that,a sheet of ply and start experimenting.

Agree, I've been grabbing a mates twin fish. It has the MRX fins in it. Goes nice but very different from a thruster.
The five fin option thing is a compromise for almost all of the fin options.
It's either a thruster with potential quads, or a quads with potential thruster. I have spoken to several shapers, and if they are making a pure quad, the fins are in a different spot to the the thruster. Tail dimensions are different too between the fin formats.
And then you want to throw in a twin fin version? Once again, the fin placement for a real twin is NOT the same as a quad or thruster with an extra fin plug. Foil is very different in a twinny, rocker too.
Even keel twinnies are good fun. And the fins should always be glassed in IMO.
That sounds awesome, it was a toss up between a fish or the MUSIC model, paid the deposit on it today! Im thinking of going the extra glass on it, However, it will only be white and no fancy business anyway, Im considering the glassed twin option but also thinking a future controller setup to have a similar feel but a bit more control.
The Dims i went for are 5'10 x 21.5 x 2"5/8

Depending on the nose width, don't be shy on the thickness. Two of my twinnies are 2 3/4 and the other is 3.
Channels work well on twin fins too. More speed down the line, and more drive through a turn in the pocket. I haven't noticed that channels make that much difference in a cutty for a twinny.
I hope you are getting a swallow tail?
And go the extra glass. 6+6+6 = a board that will last years.
One of my twinnies has that plus another 6 rear foot patch. They work best if you are really heavy on the back foot in turns I find.

Agree on this as a friend has a heavy single fin and it glides so nice, I would like a MR twin glassed like that.

Im getting it with a single channel out the back, and im pretty sure im going quad and im surely getting a biggish fish tail, so i can plant the foot and fly.

I have asked for 6+6+6 and its no extra cost. As for fins im going with FCS II MR PC fins in the front and FCS II Preformer PCC Quad Rears in small i think. To give it a bit of drive but still some looseness and slide.
Choose your plug options carefully as some systems will not allow the full interchange of fins from quad to twin. For example Futures quad rear boxes(centres) will not fit Futures side fins so your will not be able to put any at the back. The old FCS 1 are often the most versitile. That said I feel the fin positions on a quad are usually too different to set up as a true twin.

Yeah i have thought about that. thats why i was thinking futures, however i may just get an added plug to fit the three tab fcs fins with the addition of the conversion kits. If done like that. i feel like it will be the most versatile and possibly the strongest as well.
Ive got a fish thats set up as a thruster but goes heaps better with a set of MR twins and small trailer, changed the way the board goes completely love it

I like the idea of the centre stabiliser with MR sides but with the centre channel im getting and the retro style i want a twin sort of feel but with a little more versatility with my skill set.
Yeah what I have is between twin and thruster board is heaps looser but still drivey as the MR twins are a big fin by the way came as a set with stabilizer

I'm with you theDrip on many points above here too from others.
And the important parameter on fishes would be the foil because at the beginning of Twin's story, the purpose of the fish was to upgrade the old single fin surfboard. So the foil of the fishy was still influenced by the typical single fin foil which was a low entry rocker and a long tail lift coming from the front fat rail. Its fins position too, has to be as much far back like the single fin position was, bit forward that's all.
So to set quad system on a modern fish with thruster foil ( front rail thinner and more curved front rocker ) would be a large thruster fin in front with small trailer in the back but definitely won't be the same thruster front fin position .

Well its a good thing im going a straight quad setup. With the single channel out the back, there may not be enough room to add a stabiliser fin, nor do i want it. i think that it would go against the idea of the channel. Also the way im getting the fins set and the fins im getting is designed to feel similar to the twin but add some versatility. Also im putting my faith in the shaper a little on the fins to give me the feel and versatility im after (shaper is Ian Chisholm)

I think this should go well, let us know how it goes
Picking up the new stick! Hopefully get some ride time on it tomorrow and over the weekend. swell has picked up so im a tad keen. Will post some photos ASAP

Photos while it's nice and shiny?
Not really. There seems to be a bit of a trend for these sort of boards and bottoms. The plan shape is pure fish and the big concave is very similar to a Dick Van Straalen twin fin a friend got custom made recently.
I didn't like that twin fin when I surfed it, but my mate loves it.
The only thing I find a bit strange is the quad fun set up. Personally, I love the wide variety of shapes available. They all go different and almost all go good for someone.
Been reading this thread waiting for the pics ha ha - that is a bloody fun looking board!
Its fantastic, the first 5 waves were interesting haha, after that i haven't surfed another board. so fun

original fish + single concave out the tail = epic down the line speed. its different to normal shorties! but it was never meant to be similar
Do we have a ride report anyway?
Its be sensational! Have had it out all in beach breaks so far but its been amazing! so fast down the line, turns reasonably well (backhand is a bit stiffer) but when you push off the back it pushes back and it fly's. I surfed the best backhand wave i have ever surfed yesterday. effortless speed and good flow in the turns! Im not a radical/aggressive surfer as such but its a heck of fun. I think the extra weight and flat rock are helping....... maybe not on more critical waves though................. haha
