Not sure that's the problem although big fish chase small fish etc.
Thats not the question though..Im not looking for answers to this attack. Im simply asking if people have a problem with people dumping burly and bait in the water when they are surfing..
It seems not many people have a problem from what i can tell (from other pages and the lack of response), and frankly i find that rather strange..
I know both you guys have been in or around this area before, its just a really shark place, always has been.

I'm not sure that people don't care .. Speaking for myself I'm sick of the shark debate that's been raging for the last few years . Time to look after yourself and take your own measures, if you think there isn't a shark problem just keep on surfing and hope luck is on your side. If not at least try a repellent , I'm sure the people that love and care about you would be glad you did
A few months after Ben was taken at Wedge I paddled out just as a fishing club was packing up after being set up overnight. Now I often see small noahs there but I saw 4 or 5 in under ten minutes and they were all agitated and acting sketchy as, not just cruising around. Saw something larger in the channel before the reef and decided that discretion was the better part of valour, berley definitely makes a difference to fish behaviour all the way up the food chain.
I think it goes without saying that berley is going to attract fish including sharks. This is from the Fishing Monthly website:
"Berley is the regular release of small amounts of fish food into a waterway. It’s designed to attract fish, hold them in your area and trigger a more aggressive feeding response.... In the salt [water], berley may be as bold as generating a slick in 70 metres of water to entice a mako or as simple as flicking bits of bread next to a jetty to get the garfish going. "
Even if the berley attracts other fish, that only would attract sharks, would it not?

Thanks Smicko and MarkusKarkus. I was starting to think it was just me that is outraged by baiting beaches and burly were people are in the water..
I actually followed this up with fisheries and theres no law against it. But i think commonsense states there needs to be some discussion regarding this I also think a step further is to prevent people "deliberately" feeding sharks from boats
With the big run of salmon this year lots of fish being taken gutted, heads thrown back into the water in front and around my local breaks. I thought after the attack it certainly contributed to bringing in the big whites.
They don't eat many fish as they need bigger prey but the burly is going to get them interested.
WA guys might remember the row over cray boats dumping bait near the breaks in the SW I even had a sticker on my car.
Two fellas fishing off Perth's favourite beachiss on the weekend. The first one held his ground as he was first on the beach. The Second didn't know where to go as sheeple were filling in where I started. He seemed to have a conscience and kept moving. Don't know if either of them were berleying, but I suspect the pre-dawn bloke was, at least.

There was meant to be a no commercial zone in the SW of WA Cape to cape from memory. To restrict cray baits and commercial fishing in the surfing zone. But i just googled and couldn't find anything..Ill look tomorrow.
Burly will attract smaller fish and activity that in return will attract bigger fish and eventually sharks...

Fishing i get and can even except. As i said its hard as the ocean is a shared space, but i think burly like is being talked about is too much and needs regulating.
Thanks for the reply..
Having lived and work on Crayboats sharks love those ****ers and will start following them even before you are chucking old bait over the side...they associate boats with food

I spent about a year working on a super trawler off the west coast of USA, the home of whites back in the 80s and haven't seen a single shark even though our berley trail was bigger than milky way
For me there is a big difference between catching a few beach worms as seems the case in the original post from JB and laying out a chum trail that would attract a decent sized shark..
Ever tried shark fishing? Can sit there for days and not attract anything. I doubt a few frames in a bag with that much water moving around would do much at all.
Most beaches have fish on them, and plenty of them hold lots of bait fish that you can't see from shore and i'd guess this would atract more wildlife then a bloke with a few fish frames in a bag trying to catch a few worms.. Do we want to wipe out baitfish?
If you want to ban this bloke or beach fishing then you'll need to explain why your pastime more important than his???
Taken from Swellnet -
Very few things wind me up more than pandering to completely irrational arguments like the call for a shark cull.If human life is simply that precious then lets be consistent. This would mean banning anyone with a traffic offence from driving. Banning every car from travelling over 40km/h or travelling within 50m of another vehicle. Or how about an outright ban on smoking or eating anything other than unprocessed foods? All of these sources are responsible for thousands of more deaths per annum. While we are at it let ban dogs and swimming pools - because they kill more people than sharks.Great whites are endangered, so that means there are insufficient numbers to ensure their long term survival. There is no evidence that this latest attack was a Great White. There is no evidence that a cull will do anything other than allow a front page tabloid picture of a dead shark. The tabloids rejoice every time there is a shark attack because it increases their circulation. Why are some peoples thought processes so ignorant and distorted by what appears on the front page of a tabloid. Its in the same vain as people convincing themselves they are sick because of some mythical "infrasound" that comes from wind farms - just because the tabloids told them about it.If you think a cull is what it needed, then you need to go back to school.
Culling isn't ever gonna happen in today's society regardless of everyone's expert opinions
Pretty happy to use a Rpela every surf and hope for the best. Plus current WA governments policy of killing a shark that's an imminent threat makes a lot of sense.

Actually its not just that one person. There is reports of a commercial operator offshore that day dumping fish cascaras. That post i shared was just a example of what I'm talking about. Another person wrote about commercial boats passing less than 100 meter of surfers in the water.
I agree that shark chumming takes time. Having said that IN WA their is people who are returning each and every night for extended periods to attract in large sharks to catch and release. One spot this is happening is North Beach and the surf break next door "Toms" has had record shark sightings recently SP since the popularity of shark beach fishing. Fisheries though don't see this as a problem..IM just curious of surfers have a problem with this kind of behaviour
No worries JB, all I saw was the guy catching worms thing.
I'd agree with you on the rest,
People constantly burlying one spot no doubt would increase activity.
Same as commercial boats dumping their rubbiSh.
Last time I surfed a reefie just south of Perth with a mate, had a cray boat just about beach him self on the reef and threw a cray pot in like 30m away from us, thought that was a bit rough . Always get a bit nervous to when there's that commercial ficshing boat sitting a few hundred meters out of secrets
You're completely wrong. It's because two tagged whites had pinged local receivers 38 times in 24 hours as of Friday.

SO if there had not been those shark sightings, would they have run a junior surf carnival in these conditions
The whale is at bathers beach, south of south mole.

If there had been no shark pings and they cancelled due to the conditions I'd expect them to say it was cancelled due to the conditions.
